RE: MBB vs. La Tech
I'm not sure the one freshman from California (McDowell) is on the team anymore. At least he's not been around the bench for the last few home games I've been to (although he is still listed on the roster and in the game notes FWIW). Geron, Hutchins, Lieppert and Olivari are all in street clothes or sweats, take your pick.
Those four had nice messages to the Rice community on twitter today (especially Mullins, who hasn't had the best of senior years due to his injury, but again I think it's worth remembering what an impact he's had as a four-year starter - and he was our most celebrated freshman over Murphy and Peterson). Hopefully, people can come out to Tudor tomorrow night to honor the seniors. Even with our depleted roster, the USM game is certainly winnable. The timing might be perfect too for those at Reckling to come over to watch some basketball (and warm up) afterwards.

I think McDowell and Geron were on Pera's show a week or so ago, so I think McDowell is still on the team. But I have no clue why he wouldn't be on the bench for home games, even when he's (I assume) redshirting. Would be super disappointing if he's already gone, because his reputation out of HS was that of a defender, which we obviously sorely need.
Hutchins has obviously had a rocky start to his Rice career. Fought injuries last year, hasn't played in who knows how many games. He's also from upstate NY, so it's entirely possible he'll try to transfer closer to home. If I had to put money on one guy transferring (neither a prediction nor a wish), it'd be him.

Talked to Hutchins at a bskb event. Nice kid. Brutal break injury wise. Seem to be warming up when he played some this year, then.....

I should correct myself. McDowell was dressed tonight (but didn’t play - he’s redshirting the season). The four seniors are likely all done (although remember some of our football seniors are coming back - Mullins and Abercrombie could still play another year if they choose to.). We have one open scholarship right now.
No more home games but a few winnable road and tournament games. And the CBI tournament is still a possibility

On the topic of seniors, Drew Peterson is having a really good season and an incredible last few games. 27 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 blocks to beat #12 UCLA. Just hit the game winner against Oregon. His shot looks so, so much cleaner than it did at Rice. Very obvious that the USC coaches tweaked his mechanics when he got to campus. He's not their best player, but he very might well be their most important player come March.
