RE: USFL Draft
Good for terry.

I am a firm believer that a minor league of football would help the NFL and can be successful - just no one has solved the puzzle for it yet. maybe the new USFL will. (i will just watch the CFL when it comes back)

DP, I think I can logically (inductive or deductive reasoning?) figure out the puzzle.

The basic concept for a minor league, be it baseball, hockey, basketball (Gee the G-League came in handy for Covid roster additions), etc. is:

The minor league NEEDS to play their season during the same time as the major league season.

Second, preferably, the players play on a team with a contractual association with the major league team.

Using Detroit (not Washington 03-lmfao) as an example:

1) Tigers have their AAA team 50 miles away in Toledo.

2). Pistons have their G-League team an Uber ride away.

And taking it a step further. The G-League Cruise players don't need to move or do anything. As non-invasive move as possible. The MC Cruise is essentially a practice squad which plays a schedule against similar teams.

EDIT: I'd like to revise and extend my remarks (as they say in Congress):

There is NO appetite for minor league FB during the fall season. Why? There is NFL and there are several hundred D-I college teams. Once can live in any state and have D-I football.

I think there is some market - the Arena league for example lasted a couple decades before it finally fell apart. I think it benefits the NFL to have a place to store guys in the off season like NFL europe.

There certainly is a spring market. The prior leagues were launched without the necessary capital. The USFL actually was on the cusp of success and then they let our ex-president into ownership. Donald wanted an NFL team, forced the owners into a lawsuit and won a $1 judgement that was trebled to $3. Bye, bye USFL.

I used to watch the USFL. It was good football. A ton of really all-star players.

Without looking it up, was the USFL essentially out of business when they won their $3?

Did the league fail to play a spring season and then simply folded rather than play the fall season?

I'm not sure how the USFL won on MEDIA. Didn't they have games on ABC? ESPN?

The verdict was July 29, 1986. I'll check if there had been a 1986 spring season.

EDIT: there was no 1986 season. The league was losing tons of money and imploded financially.

As the aftermath of the trial would attest. It is kind of hard to run a league on $3.
