It was pretty clear where Mark was going with his analogy. I think he'd be the first to admit he wasn't likening the UC AD to Amazon beyond the statement in question. I feel like most arguments could be avoided here if we didn't spend so much time arguing over tangential/irrelevant points to the overall argument.

I thought it was clear... analogies don't have to be apples to apples comparisons. But a good "gotcha" post is the hallmark of message boards.

RE: State of College Football
I actually agree with Mark and Cataclysmo, which concerns me. It's time for me to reevaluate my life.

The point is the athletic budgets may be in the red every year, but the intangible value they are bringing to the university through enhanced perception and future enrollment growth should more than make up for the current negative cash flow. I think that's their point anyways, if not then I'll jump on the bandwagon of disagreeing with them which feels more normal for me. This is similar to how a for profit business would make decisions via reducing cash flow to invest in future growth of their business.

I think a better analogy is how Amazon funds its marketing department.

Amazon doesn't expect Marketing to turn a profit. Amazon has a marketing budget because even though marketing costs money, it provides tangible benefits to the rest of the organization.

At UC, the AD is the primary marketing tool. Colleges like OSU and Alabama are lucky that their "marketing" departments actually provide profit to the overall organization. UC isn't that lucky, so our "marketing" department costs us money. In that sense, UC is more similar to Amazon than to OSU.

I'm as guilty of it as anyone. I once chastised someone for saying Keith Williams had a Kobe-like throwback streetball game. I think my response was something along the lines of "oh so now Keith is Kobe?", completely missing their point lol.
