Universities are not people. Conferences are not marriages. In some ways the things are a little bit analogous, but you haven't really answered the original question at all here.

This is a business relationship, not a personal one; your comparison of contractual obligations to personal relationships is neither fair nor valid.

I have many personal flaws, but professionally, I keep my word when I give it. That's both in writing and in speech (which arguably isn't contractual, but that's neither here nor there when giving my personal morals on matters). The SB3 think they can break their contractual word without consequence; I think that the legal consequence will be such that it will disincentivize others from attempting the same actions in future realignments, but we will see if that is the case soon enough.
