The Evolution of Conference USA
I've seen many people casually refer to the different iterations of CUSA as it has evolved over time as "CUSA X.0", with the current version typically being called 3.0. I tried to map out the history of the different versions, and I'm interested in whether this syncs up with the general perception. Let me know what you think!

EDIT: I've updated the chart so 2013 is 3.0 rather than 2014.

I'd personally say 2013 was a big enough change to make that one 3.0, 2022 is still a iteration within the 3.X range, and that 2023 will be 4.0.

You've got Army coming in but I can't see where they leave.

Nice spreadsheet. It'd be interesting to compare that to the AAC and look at the overlap
Great illustration of the decay of the conference over time

Yes, that was another thought I had, though it would mean the current version is 3.1 as opposed to 3.0.

I just omitted Army in 2005 (CUSA 2.0) to indicate they had left.

EDIT: But good point that they're not present in 2001. Fixed, thanks!

RE: The Evolution of Conference USA
...we Blazers will (eventually) log the most seasons (well, in most sports... 03-banghead) in C-USA - overall, it's been quite a ride...

Amazing how many teams have passed through, which now are moving up... those first 5-6 seasons were as stout in all sports as most conferences at the time... things definitely change, tho... hope the newbies (and those who are still there) have success!!! 04-cheers

P.S. - I'd relieve the current commish of duties ASAP, probably a REAL good start... 03-phew

Many of the schools in this conference, particularly the ones rooted in the old Metro Conference, have been conference nomads for many decades. My alma mater falls in that category. Shoot, Cincinnati has switched conferences in some fashion just about every decade:

Independent: 1885-1909
OAC: 1910-1925
Buckeye Athletic Conference: 1926-1935
Indy: 1936-1946
MAC: 1947-1952
MVC: 1957-1969
Indy: 1970-1974
Metro (FB Indy): 1975-1991
Great Midwest (FB Indy): 1991-1995
1996-2004: CUSA
2005-2013: Big East
2014-2022: AAC
2023 or 2024: BXII

RE: The Evolution of Conference USA
The C-USA of 2001 was rather strong in both major sports.

Having followed Memphis, Cincinnati, DePaul and Middle Tennessee State for many years, all the changes is somewhat stunning.

Good job, nerdlinger, with the chart.

RE: The Evolution of Conference USA
When the '01 version was raided I really had (slim) hopes for a moment that the WAC would be able to take a school or two from CUSA instead of the other way around. If we'd been able to add 2, that would have pushed UTEP to a western division and might have mitigated travel some. But I guess the CUSA tv deals and central/eastern time zone make up was a bigger pull east than what the WAC could offer at the time.

I also really hoped (slightly more realistically) that Tech would have been the 4th WAC team invited instead of UTEP. Missed on that one, too.
