Both Minott could be VERY good players next year. Their potential is strong. I hope both return to the program.

I hope Bates does.. but he needs to build some serious muscle on the off season.. I got no doubt Minott is coming back next year.. Williams and Duren gone.. Minott will have plenty of playing time next year.

One thing that everyone leaves out when they say the team turned around when Bates went out is...Williams and Nolley both returned right at the time Bates left.

It wasn't just Bates left and Magically they were better...We got back our best player and an all conference player from the previous year.

Can't agree enough. I feel it has more to do with Williams and Nolley coming back then it does losing Bates. In my "Tigers #2" thread, I specifically mention Williams and don't mention Bates for that reason, since the time frames overlap.

Honestly nothing against Bates...

But we don't need any more bodies...Give Penny more bodies and he is going to play them.

It appears that CPH is taking a more measured approach to substitutions lately. It doesn't feel as wholesale as it was, and I believe I understand his thinking: get the bench stronger, keep the core guys fresh, and make sure folks are receiving playing time so they feel like they are contributing. It's not a bad way to do it as long as the team has deep talent and it doesn't disrupt flow or create liabilities. This is where I feel he's struggled historically. Lately, things seem to be improving in that regard, and I'm hopeful it will continue to be refined.

We showed improvement in the Alabama game, but then injuries & vaccination status started to reek havoc on our roster. Against Alabama, Bates’ minutes were significantly cut and Penny put the game on the shoulders of his veterans, and they responded. We are at our best when we play our best players, and right now, Emoni is not one of them.

Isn't that essentially what macgar32 already said? Why use it as an opportunity to speak ill of Bates? At this stage, everyone understands that he needs more time to develop. There's enough Bates bashing going around without shoveling more onto the pile. If we're being critical, its "wreak havoc" and not "reek havoc." Reek implies something stinks, kinda like kicking a kid when he's down. Back to you Mr. Mensa.

Perhaps you’re right but I have difficulty understanding Penny’s insistence on playing the kid at the expense of his team & am concerned he’ll be tempted to do it again to appease the father. Penny’s a good guy to a fault.

I agree, Penny does seem to be a good guy to a fault at times, but I'm convinced he wants to win games and will make good decisions to accomplish that end. We're at a critical crux in the season and he has many data points to base decisions on. Today's game at SMU should go a long way towards shedding more light.

I think it has less to do with being a good guy and more to do with he wants to continue signing high ranked players.

Have you ever heard of negative recruiting? Look it up, then think it through and I am sure you will see a long list of reasons why any coach would do their best to give Bates playing time.

When a guy has to tell you he's "smart" there's a really high probability that he isn't.

The best thing for Emoni would be to stay at Memphis & work his ass off show he’s willing to work to improve; and I think if the decision were his, he would. The problem will come from with those surrounding him who will need to place blame his lack of development on the staff.
