Sources say Queens University of Charlotte (Division II) will vote this week on a possible transition to Division 1. Have received interest from the Atlantic Sun, Big South, and others according to Jon Rothstein. Thoughts?

Big South would fit them better

With all due respect, why would the ASUN bother with these guys when they need football schools?

They were talking to them before JSU was invited to CUSA. Austin Peay was already coming so football would have been fine.

And now you can basically say the same thing about the Big South.

If Queens moves up, I'd be surprised if they wound up anywhere but the Big South. It's a perfect fit.

They were included in a tweet last September saying the ASUN was vetting them along with Lincoln Memorial (also non-football), Valdosta State, and West Georgia.

Ted likely wants them for their swimming/diving program. They are a dynasty in D2 in the pool. Gumbart is simultaneously the Commissioner of the ASUN and the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association, which is a catch all conference for D1 affiliates in swimming/diving and beach volleyball.

Also, Charlotte is a very decent-sized market for the conference to add to their footprint.

I'd rather add more football schools. But I'm sure a contingent of our members would like to see another private non football school so they don't get outnumbered too heavily. Adding them and a football public gets us to 12 members. 6 football, 6 no football, 5 of which are privates. That gets us the auto bid for football. If the hooping schools want to keep it balanced, I hope we get to 14 total members or find some football only affiliates.

No point to adding them IMO as an outsider looking in.

I agree that it's not ideal. But, if they are added, I don't think they'll be the only ones. I'd imagine them and three schools with football getting the league to 14.

Wouldn't that put is at 15?

We have 12 now.

We're losing two (JSU, Liberty) which would take us down to 10.

But we're gaining Austin Peay which gets us back to 11.

If you add Queens we're back to twelve, and three football schools would have us at 15.

Per usual for D2 schools, Queens had a good men's hoops season this past year and their head coach was hired away by D1 Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

The Royals have promoted their assistant to HC and he's completing his staff.
