RE: CAA expansion: stay at 12, or expand to 14/16?
Could be the other way around too, Fairfield wanted to be an all sports member and the CAA said no. Possibly tried leveraging the A10 name to hope the CAA would change their mind. Or after being told no, they didnt want to associate at all with the conference.

A-10 is starting men's lax, as expected, with six teams: UMass, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph’s, High Point and Hobart.
No Fairfield.

Great outcome in my mind.
So new lineup is:
Delaware
Towson
Hofstra
Drexel
Monmouth
Stony Brook
Hampton
Fairfield
I'm ok with this. There is a lot of good potential with this lineup.
Also covers a lot of fertile recruiting territory.

This will be one of the strongest conferences nationally for men’s LAX.

Definitely one of the strongest for its size. The Patriot has an argument for being slightly stronger but they're the same tier IMO. The ACC, Ivy, and B1G will be better on a team-by-team basis, but those conferences are all smaller than the CAA.
Hopefully Hampton can get their program up to speed, they've really struggled in the SoCon and the CAA is much better. Could see some ugly scores the first couple years.

RE: CAA expansion: stay at 12, or expand to 14/16?
Interesting Forbes article on the CAA's expansion. Some nuggets:
- Planning for expansion started before JMU announced they were leaving, and allegedly JMU was an active participant in expansion discussions
- The new schools all cited how CAA membership could help with recruiting non-athletes based on name recognition, academic prowess, and geographic footprint
- NC A&T specifically is attemtping to become an R1 institution and believes CAA membership can help with that
- Monmouth cited having all of their programs in a single conference as a major positive
- NC A&T and Stony Brook both cited regional scheduling as a major attraction

The "active participant" line is interesting because one wonders how much it veers into exaggeration. Additionally, no shock that planning was done before the JMU announcement, as the writing was on the wall, but it is intriguing to me how the conference is ensuring a spin of proactiveness over appearing merely "reactive" to James Madison and picking up the pieces in its SBC wake.
A great summary of the story, J, thanks

Thanks for sharing. I still wonder whether the data backs it up, but you can 100% see that ADs and presidents believe that conference footprint and peers matter in terms of student recruitment at large. As long as they believe that, I think the CAA is in decent shape.
I know a lot of us think the conference is down a bit, but it's clear that college administrators respect the league for its relatively strong academics and athletic aspirations.

All sounds logical, reasonable and reasoning for new schools i've heard in the past. Including JMU in expansion talks was the most puzzling considering everyone knew they had one foot out the door. Makes me wonder if they hinted they would stay if the expansion was done in a manner they favored.

This is a major flip...and basically twice now they have flirted but denied. Really surprised at this turn of events.

They didn't want to be the school that killed the MEAC. I strongly believe if it wasn't for the leak to the media their statement would be different.

With Howard out of picture, (trying to keep the MEAC together it seems!), what about UMBC? There’s been a lot of chatter here about Albany and Fairfield, and either of them would be fine addition.
But with UMBC, I think a local rivalry with Towson could be a boost for both. I don’t really see the benefit of territorial fight in mid-major. Not like there’s a lot of money to be made from media. Having close proximity can give both sets of fans a true rival and excitement. Baltimore doesn’t really have a local bball team.
I am hoping Stony Brook and Hofstra, being in CAA together, can create some buzz in LI.

I think UMBC is a school that makes a lot of sense for the CAA

I am big on UMBC as a CAA fit as well. They're geographically out of place in the America East. They have built-in brand recognition from their upset win vs. UVA. When it comes to basketball-only adds, it's a move that makes a lot of sense.

Am remembering rumors of Queens U. being a CAA candidate. The program has held its own in first year of D1 through the non-conference schedule.

UMBC and Queens would add 2 basketball centric members in Big cities that fit in well with in the geographic core of their halves of the CAA

As I said in another thread months ago, I think this "rumor" came from Queens itself. But fake it till you make it, I guess.

So far the "rumored" add on would be a better basketball addition than the ones we got.
