Well IMO, my comment covers #1. You can't coach Boise-level talent to win in the SEC because the good SEC teams have way better talent than that (and thus are much better).
As for #2, OK, didn't know that.
...for the sake of space, I cut the 'innards' out of this thread - anyway, yeah, you run a risk when you get a successful coach from a 'mid-major' (yeah, sorry, it's either that, or 'G5'...) ..it can be done, but the undeniable things that Harsin is guilty of is not understanding the BIG deal that the 'Auburn Family' IS... as AUHC, you HAVE to show for ANY and ALL of these types of events, and make yourself accessible as much as possible... In that respect, no sympathy for the dude - it's part of the multi-million dollar deal you signed (well, doubt there are specific events noted in the deal, but a 'general' clause is most likely there - "to attend functions, etc.") - Boise apparently was not that way, and I assume there was little to no 'mingling' events for him to be bothered with... I DID notice he was at the AU-A&M Bball game yesterday walking amongst the crowd, and was overall quite warmly received... I think he may have won the respect of many of the AU faithful, at least in terms of his 'commitment', or whatever... we will see what happens after AU's first loss in 2022... (hoping there aren't any as an Aubie, but, I'm a realist... )
BUT, I think most of the other issues (especially the alleged 'tomfoolery' accusations, which have now vanished) were at best a bit 'trumped-up'. In the era of the Portal, I figure any coaching change will produce a lot more transfers that we are used to... but time will tell - still have to solidify the staff as well, which is another 'question' as to his 'process'... should make for an intriguing season this fall...
That bolded part reminds me of when Nick Saban came to LSU in 2000. I recall hearing some initial grumbling, the first year or so he was there, from LSU BigWigs that Saban didn't do the usual hob-nobbing. He didn't play golf with big boosters at the local Country Clubs, didn't mix and mingle at the elite shindigs, etc.
But he did speak a very clear language of making LSU, long a bridesmaid in the SEC, into a Bride. And he recruited well out of the gate (in 1999-2000, LSU's class was ranked #21. In 2000-2001, Saban's first full year, it was #2). That quieted the grumbling enough to buy him the time until the winning came, at which point the grumbling evaporated.
Maybe Harsin can start winning and do the same.
I'm always amazed how the assumptions of those extant to the events keep rolling in in spite of the facts on the ground. Tell me Quo, how did Saban work out at LSU long term? Do they still pine for him, or despise him? The response to Harsin has been carefully explained. It in no way equates to Saban. Saban came from a noted Big 10 program where he had success, not Boise State past prime. LSU people were in agreement of the hire, not divided. Saban and Harsin were both culture shocks. Saban did what it took with Emmert's consent. Harsin has bucked strong suggestions from above. Saban had an upward trajectory. Harsin does not. He had grace from the entire fan base (save trustees) until we saw game after game which displayed no learned lessons, no admission of faults, and no corrections, only increased disdain and confusion on the part of some players and many fans. The recruiting failures now span 2 years. The good will he has burned among donors is significant. And the AD who hired him may be on a hotter seat than he is.
My concern is that his first year was hamstrung by hires not of his choice. I'm a firm believer in permitting the head of a program succeed or fail on his own terms. So, I hope this year he has all of his people and I hope each new one gets a one year contract.
