RE: WBB vs USM
Good start to 1Q for the Owls. Really bad finish. 15-18 USM going to 2Q.

Owls lead 12-8 with 2 minutes to play in the quarter. Outscored 10-3 to close the quater.

Honestly, Jackson might have to play 40 minutes even when we're healthy. You really don't appreciate her impact until she's off the court.

I wish the refs would force the SoMiss coach off the floor. At times she's like a 6th player out there.

Owls shooting less than 38%. 1-8 from 3pt range. Yikes.

Owls need to throw a pass off her while she’s on the court. A hard one.

We keep telegraphing passes in front of Dominique Davis, who's converting steal/fast-break layups as well as 3s.

One of the worst defensive quarters of the season for us. Zero adjustments from Edmonds defending guards outside or bigs inside. Must feel like practice for Southern Miss at this point. You've gotta take pride in your defense to be a stopper and I'm not seeing a lot of pride on that end.

RE: WBB vs USM
Such poor execution at the end of the 3Q. Easy 2 for 1 situation, instead we turn down 2-3 good looks in favor of a bad Swayze midrange jumper. Southern Miss runs down the clock and makes 2 FTs. You've purposefully turned down the opportunity to try for 4-6 points in favor of 2 points. 63-45 Southern Miss.

I'm reminded of a game between UH and Texas Tech, back when I was doing stats for both Rice and UH. Gerald Myers spend probably 3/4 of the game on the court, mostly complaining about the officiating, which was truly abysmal, even by SWC basketball standards, and was in fact hurting both teams about equally. At one point, Clyde Drexler made a totally unexpected steal and headed for the basket at the other end, only to find Myers in his way. He dribbled neatly around him and completed the layup. After the game he was asked why he did not run into Myers to call attention to what was going on. He replied, "The game those officials were having, they would probably have called me for the charge."

It all my years of watching SWC basketball, I have to say that game was the worst job of officiating for 40 minutes that I have ever seen.

You can kind of see why Langley never really consistently played Swayze. Langley's a defense-first coach and Swayze...has some issues defensively. Like on that play with 7:00 left. It's kind of inexplicable how she could leave Davis alone for a 3 with the game that Davis has had.

Slightly off topic but no need for another thread to mention this:

2019 seems like a lifetime ago, when we played Marquette at College Station regional (and lost that late double digit lead).

But just noticed on yesterday’s Bracketology Texas A&M in the first four OUT and then Marquette in the next four OUT.
And of course we’re probably in the “last four out” 03-wink

Anyway:

COVID-19 / CollegeStation-19 curse?

55-78 your final this afternoon from Tudor.

USM outscored us by 30 after our starting 9-2 run. (46-76).

Bad loss. What happen? Maybe we should have played more zone instead of trying to run with them.

I thought USM was a better team until I looked up their Massey Rankings.

Even after the lopsided win by Southern Miss at Tudor, USM is 198 in Massey (11th in CUSA) vs Rice’s 188 (10th).

It’s ok to have a bad game, but you sure don’t want to let an inferior division rival boat race you by 20 on your home court.

With our very limited depth we’re going to be streaky.

On the other hand with the win USM is 4-4 and alone in 2nd in the West (a double-bye seed). Rice is 1-6 for 7th in the West, but still well within reach of 5th which would at least get us clear of the play-in game.

We’ve played some good ball recently, so if we’re going to be streaky, let’s hope we get back to the good side of that soon!! A few good wins will go a long way in building back confidence and moving up the table a little bit.
