Well, they did say that part of Tommy West’s downfall as our Tiger coach was his reliance on Juco players. That was the “word on the street” back then.

Supposedly, this is a different day. I am optimistic that Coach Silverfield has a good handle on the talent situation. Let’s see how we do in the 2022 season and then decide whether to throw brickbats or bouquets.

Football
Juco in strategic spots is smart. Always has been. It's when you are not getting any HS talent and are totally relying on juco that you get in trouble (West).

Basketball
There is no need to go after juco these days. Get HS players who can contribute roles, and get transfers. If you're getting more than 1 juco in bb, it would be a sign of trouble. I have seen nothing about Penny going after jucos in the future - but maybe I missed it. MOST bb coaches have said they are shifting a lot of emphasis to TRANSFER recruiting - but not juco.
