Okanu is on the line for 2 shots.
Makuoi picked up his 4th foul on, what looked like, a pretty clean block. I think Crump is the one that might have fouled him but Makuoi got the foul...

We've stopped scoring. As soon as I complimented Crump, he started forcing up shots in the middle. He did just hit 2 from the line and he's playing really well on the defensive side and rebounding. But we can't come away from a possession with 0 points.

Yes, the two Crump 4 footer misses really hurt. Hankerson not getting call on layup the dagger. We win 1 out of 10 of these 50/50 close games so no surprise we get the loss.
Tough loss and the team really battles.

Leading Scorers
NIU
Williams - 16
Hankerson - 12
Kueth - 12
Makuoi - 10
Crump - 10
Ball State
Cochran - 17
Thomas 13
Sparks - 11
Brown - 10
I'm afraid we're going to probably see a lot of games this year that are close and come down to the (relative) wire but...unlike the football team...we don't pull them out.

While Hankerson not getting the foul call was the nail in the coffin, in live speed, I wasn't convinced they fouled him and it didn't surprise me it was a no call. But man...getting 2 there would have been big.
Turned out to be a 4 point swing with Bumbalough getting the rebound and getting fouled and then hitting both FTs on the other end.

For sure.
There's just too many holdovers from Monty. As much as I'm done with Cochran, he'd be a big help on this team (obviously as long as Williams is still on the team).
But he's not and, like was pointed out, they play hard.
The more I watch Russell, the more I like him and think he could be a nice piece. I think between him, Thornton and Williams, they're solid at the guard position. Add in Kon and some of the new guys and its a deep unit.
I would love to see Myrik get some minutes but I suppose he's hurt and will probably red shirt.
And I can't wish any harder that Mitchell finds his way to DeKalb in the Fall.

I have no clue why I wrote that.
Reminds me of that scene from Moneyball when Jonah Hill gives Brad Pitt a stack of Player Evaluations and asks Hill how many he did. Hill says he did 47 then corrects himself and says he actually did 51. Hill then says he does know why he said 47.

This year, I have no problem with games like these. As long as they are in the game shows improvement. The winning will come later.
Also the couple of games final scores reminded me alot of the Monty era conference scores, they were in the game but always seemed to lose it at the end.by 6 or 7 points.

RE: MBB vs Ball State Cardinals
Here are some random observations after attending last night’s game.
This teams plays hard and is fun to watch even though they are not winning.
Last night’s game was a winnable game and like most conference games, winning and losing comes down to a few key possessions. As this team gains experience, I believe these losses will become wins.
Quickness and athletic ability is a strength of this team. I really like the energy Russell brings off the bench. His quickness in creating turnovers keyed a run that led to a brief lead.
Need post players that can finish better around the rim. The effort is there but the execution isn’t. Also there is a need for more physically mature baseline players. Our post players are constantly fighting foul trouble due to lack of size.
Cochran’s outside and free throw shooting has really improved. He was very pumped for the game last night. He came out to take the floor before the tip-off screaming and chest bumping his teammates.
The student section had three rows of fans which is more than we normally have. Even though they were small, they were very into the game and were fun to watch. The even cheered on the floor mop guy. I hope they continue to grow in numbers.

Good comments, however, I don’t understand the “As this team gains experience, I believe these losses will become wins” narrative. If you look at the roster, we have six seniors and four juniors on the 14 man roster. I have also heard the broadcasters (particularly road broadcasts) refer to how young we are. This is NOT a young team, in fact, it is very heavily upperclassmen. Thankfully, I think it will help Coach Burno turnover this roster, which clearly needs to happen.

I was looking at the future starting next year. I agree there could be a lot of turnover with the front line going into next year. That is where most of the upper class men are.
It’s hard to tell right now who will be moving on or returning with the extra year of eligibility. It could improve this season as this years players continue to adapt and gain experience with the new coach and system, plus there are a lot of new players who have not played together before.
