Some said we'd never have a chance at getting College Gameday once we move up, but I disagree.
I could definitely see them coming back, knowing that we know how to host a great show.

Only way we are getting gameday is if we are top 25 and either hosting a P5 or another ranked team. Not unlikely but I think thats what it is going to take. A UVA/VT at JMU would have a good shot in my opinion. Particularly VT so they can play the rematch card

I was thinking JMU/App State.
Obviously this is years down the road, but if we were both ranked with 1 loss or undefeated, it's definitely a chance. Obviously a lot of other factors would have to fall in place... primarily no other P5 game that is must watch. That's how we got it in the past... no reason to think it's impossible.

Agree, could see them coming back if we host a big game, possibly even against SBC teams like Coastal or App St if they are undefeated and/or ranked and the cards fall right.

Hosting gameday as an FCS team is a rare event, and believe NDSU is the only FCS team other than JMU to have hosted it more than once. If ESPN has an opportunity to showcase JMU for a significant FBS game, I believe they will do so.

2022 college football storylines we're already looking forward to

Welcome to the party, JMU

Quote:JMU was a big get for the Sun Belt. The Dukes went 70-11 from 2016 to '21, winning the 2016 FCS title and losing close games to North Dakota State deep in the playoffs in 2017, 2019 and 2021. Their investment levels are strong, and they finished second in my FCS SP+ ratings this year with a rating that, adjusted for FBS, would have ranked fifth in the Sun Belt. While they had a number of seniors on the 2021 squad, head coach Curt Cignetti is adding some intriguing players via the transfer portal. James Madison won't be eligible for a Sun Belt title for a while, but it should immediately look like a sturdy FBS team and a midlevel Sun Belt squad. Welcome, Dukes!

Awesome. Actually gave me goosebumps. Have. Waited. So. Long.

It really is surreal. I am not sure it's even sunken in yet that this is really happening.

This is correct. CGD has been to a G5 school sixteen times, with only six featuring a matchup of at least one of the opponents being unranked. The only three that have hosted without the home team being ranked were all service academies and they likely went for that “novelty”.

So JMU must be ranked (required). It also really helps if the opponent is also ranked. JMU will also likely need to be undefeated and the opponent may need to be as well.

Our odds of hosting have dropped significantly.

Here are the only G5 to host multiple times:
Air Force - 3
Utah - 2 (now a P5)

Coastal Carolina in 2020 is the only SBC school to host.

RE: ESPN Welcomes JMU to FBS
Yeah we still need everything else to fall in place like we did before, but now it's gonna be harder for us to be the best option when that does happen. Before it was when there were no ranked FBS matchups and they were able to play us up as a ranked FCS matchup. A lot easier for that to hit just right when you're ranked all year and have several ranked teams on your schedule.

Now we have to hope that we're having a really good year, things fall in place to have a week where there are no really high ranked matchups or ranked P5 vs ranked P5, annnnnd then hope that week hits the right one or maybe two possibilities in our schedule.

Although I'm sure it doesn't hurt that they've already been here and seen what a great crowd we'll bring plus they can make a story out of their return to JMU after we moved up. We probably have a little bit of an edge there over most G5's but still need A LOT to go right.

JMU would be the first team to do this since they implemented "the Marshall rule" that required the two year transition process. Marshall beat Montana in the I-AA natty in 1996 and played in the MAC in 1997.

JMU would be the only team to do this in the past 25 years.

Side note: Both JMU and Marshall have 2 I-AA/FCS titles with wins over Montana and YSU in national championship games. Marshall won the MAC East with an 8-1 conference record in 1997, their first FBS year.
In other words, every move up since Marshall has had their last season in I-AA/FCS as playoff ineligible. Officially announce before (July 1?) of that calendar year, and you would be playoff ineligible that upcoming season, I-A/FBS the next season (examples believe this was the case with App St and GSU in 2013). Officially announce after July 1 (like JMU), playoff eligible that season, I-AA/FCS playoff inelgible the next, then I-A/FBS the next. That seems to be the case with every moveup going back to Marshall.

So instead of having 2 throwaway seasons: Playoff ineligible in FCS, followed by a conference & bowl ineligible season in FBS, JMU just just has the one throwaway FBS season. Do I have that right?

This sounds correct to me. JMU will be playing a full FBS schedule with at least 10 FBS games as a member of SBC. We will likely play 8 SBC games, either 2/3 FBS OOC, and 1/2 FCS OOC. Folks like JB and Cig have been saying "at least 10" FBS games, it isn't clear yet whether they can or want to replace the second FCS game that was previously scheduled.

This is effectively the 2nd year of transition after announcement, and it was said JMU/SBC would apply for a waiver for this, which appears to have been granted. It has been said this would shorten the transition by 1 year.

What is a little less clear to me is timing of eligibility for conference title. Most seem to be saying/suggesting that would not be until 2023, though I've also seen some comments that suggest it could be possible in 2022 if SBC and NCAA choose to allow that. Georgia Southern for instance won SBC title their first year of playing in the conference. For Bowl eligibility it appears normal bowl eligibility will be 2023, though JMU could potentially fill a slot in 2022 if they have 6+ qualifying wins and there are not enough other 6 win teams.

I don't understand all the pessimism around this. Yes, more highly ranked P5's will get priority. But IF JMU can have a magical season or two and be ranked and/or undefeated and playing a ranked team, that would be higher priority than any FCS matchups.

Gameday will generally feature P5 over G5 simply because they are more likely to be two ranked teams playing a "big" game. But Coastal was host when they were ranked and conditions were right. And a ranked G5 will be featured over FCS every time. FCS gets a rare chance when there are no good FBS games to showcase, and that's not very often.

If JMU wins and gets into a big time game situation, the odds are at least as good as they were in FCS to host gameday, and really a bit better overall.

I feel like people saying we won't host gameday again are really saying JMU won't find success in FBS. Its like clinging to the king of the small pond mentality (fcs). Yes, the competition and challenges are greater in FBS, but there is no reason to think we can't succeed.

RE: ESPN Welcomes JMU to FBS
I'm very confident in JMU football being successful in FBS and the Sun Belt, I just don't think the way GameDay worked out for us in the past is nearly as likely now. Both times there were no FBS games between two ranked opponents so they came to JMU and played it up as the only or highest D1 ranked vs ranked matchup.

Before, we could hope that happens with the FBS matchups one week and have several weeks where it could mean we get it. We're always gonna be ranked and we're likely to have multiple ranked opponents between Villanova, Delaware, Richmond, New Hampshire, and maybe others. Now if we're ranked it's likely there'll only be one other top 25 team in our conference if that. That means just a few weeks where we can hope we're ranked, our opponent is ranked, and then still have to hope the rest of that week's games work out in our favor too. Being ranked and/or undefeated and playing a ranked opponent is just far less likely now, and then we still have to hope that when that happens there isn't also some top ten matchup that week.

Having seen what a great atmosphere JMU brings and having Lee Fitting at ESPN helps us compared to other G5's, but it still seems much more likely we could get GameDay back when FCS. It's definitely not anywhere near impossible though, I won't be surprised if we get a third.

This. Love that they say this out loud, as it reaffirms what many on this board have been saying about JMU being a top target for the SBC for a while now as opposed to JMU being lucky that a couple schools in SBC pushed hard for their membership as it if it wasn’t obvious to the SBC members that JMU brings a lot to the table.

A lot of these comparisons assume the CAA was where it was a few years ago. It isn't the "SEC of the FCS" anymore. It had become JMU and the occasional other school such as Villanova or Delaware and a bunch of teams that beat each other up. I believe the likelihood of a ranked matchup that could be justified for CGD is probably more likely now in the Sunbelt then if we stayed in the CAA. We are definitely leaving the CAA at the right time.

Agree. Not to mention, if JMU is fortunate enough to host Gameday again, then the general public sentiment will be different (in a good way) than it was in the past, as we will be viewed as a deserving FBS team that is making noise in the big leagues. Of course there will always be the d-bags from certain P5 conferences and schools that will turn their noses and suggest we aren’t deserving of the publicity over their schools but it will be less of them IMO.

Also, our game would likely be televised on one of the major ESPN channels that day as opposed to only JMU fans that subscribe to Flo actually seeing the game. Big difference.

I think you're forgetting that the new SBC is actually better known and more respected that it ever was. App St and Marshall are both well-known and respected nationally both for the football and fan bases. A top matchup against them will be considered compelling. USM, Louisiana and Georgia Southern all have strong brands that are well known and Coastal is building a solid reputation and Troy has potential. This isn't the MAC where they'll never get over the stigma of nameless directional schools in some podunk cowtown that is dwarfed by the B1G schools in every way.

Also of the CAA schools only Villanova has interest outside the mid-Atlantic region. Richmond, Delaware, NH, none of them move the needle.

For any college football history nerds. Old list of former I-AA/FCS move ups. Updated it. Not going to be 100% accurate.

Most of the below schools started football long before were I-AA, and 1900s were a mix of ‘small college division’, NAIA, Div II/III prior to becoming I-AA.
(Seasons in I-AA/FCS)
1. Akron (80-86’)
2. La Tech (82’-88’)
3. Ark State (82’-91’)
4. Nevada (78’-91’)
5. La Monroe (82’-93’)
6. N Tex (82’-94’)
7. UCF (90-95’) (Only 6 seasons I-AA but 1st team 1979).
8. Boise St (78’-95’)
9. Marshall (82’-96’)
10. Buffalo (93’-98’) (Only 6 seasons I-AA but 1st team 1937).
11. Mid Tenn St (78’-98’)
12. UConn (78’-99’)
13. Troy (93’-01’)
14. WKU (78’-08’)
15. Tx State (84'-11')
16. UMass (78'-11')
17. App State (82'-11')
18. GSU (82'-11')
19. CCU (03’-15’)
20. Liberty (89’-17’) (1973-1980 NAIA, 1981-1987 Div II)
21. JMU ('80-21')
22. JSU (95’-22’) (1st team late 1800s, NAIA 1966-1981, Div II 1982-1994)
23. SHSU (86’-22’) (1st team 1912, NAIA 1932-1981, Div II 1982-1985)

Drive bys: From 1st yr of football to I-A within 5 years:
24. UAB (93’-95’)
25. USF (97’-00’)
26. FAU (01’-05)
27. FIU (02’-05’)
28. USA (11') (Mickey was offered the job here in 08')..
29. UTSA (11-12')
30. ODU (09'-13')
31. GST (10'-12')
32. UNCC (13')

Of those 32 former I-AA schools that have joined I-A over the last 36 years, number in P5 conferences as of 2023 = 1 (UCF).

Move downs:
1. Idaho (78’-95’, 18’- current)

Move downs:
1. Idaho (78’-95’, 18’- current)

Thanks for sharing this list. Pretty cool.
Although probably not so cool for Idaho. That's really sad that they have been the only one. To be fair, I'm sure there are many that should move down and would probably be better off if they did.
I prefer it when the NCAA gets out of the way, but this is one thing I really wish the NCAA would do more. There are so many FBS schools that lose season in and out and have poor attendance (*cough* MAC) and have no consequences aside from just losing money for their school. It also leads to a worse FBS product. If the FBS were a better product top to bottom, perhaps the P5 to G5 difference wouldn't be so much.
I would like to see a scenario where those schools have an FBS "timeout" and move down to FCS. It would serve two purposes: 1. Motivation to improve their program and the chances of improving it become greater. 2. The FCS could actually become stronger.
I realize there are a TON of obstacles in the way (scholarship limits, as well as big financial problems, not to mention title IX stuff), but I think it would be good for both FBS and FCS. Likely? Not, but just something to throw around on a message board.

RE: ESPN Welcomes JMU to FBS
JMU was still DIII when I saw them play for the first time.

Going from FCS to the Sunbelt is a step up in competition, but I get a chuckle from those who think JMU will be making a big step up in national recognition.

Being the best at any level brings some recognition, but being the best in the Sunbelt won't bring that much more recognition than being the best in FCS brought.

I look forward to future success for the Dukes.

I disagree. If you mean people caring about us then I’d agree but in terms of recognition it’s much more. Winning the Sun Belt would mean we’re probably ranked in the top 25. That gets noticed way more than an fcs heavyweight. When I travel out of Virginia or close border states, no one knows who JMU is. They know who app state or Coastal Carolina is though if they like football. They might not know much about them or care about them but they recognize them and know that they’re a solid football program. Being ranked in FBS puts you into the spotlight for all to see

I have to disagree to an extent. In regards to the elite FBS in the P5 you are correct. However, you don't need to look too much further from App State and Coastal Carolina. There are plenty of people that had never heard of those schools. When they got a ranking that changed. They were now being mentioned, which was far from what they were before.
If we look at history, schools in the Sun Belt got very little love or recognition. However things these last few years have changed quite a lot.
We have an opportunity to keep moving the needle.
The fact that ESPN took an opportunity to speak about us, a G5 team in the Sun Belt, is a good thing.
As a conference, more teams need to do what App State, Louisiana and Coastal have been doing.
