I would be shocked if JMU doesn’t play App St. in 2022. With an 11 game schedule, and 3 OOC (MTSU, Louisville and Norfolk), that leaves 8 SBC games, 4 home, 4 away. Those 8 SBC games should create a schedule where JMU plays all East SBC teams, and 2 West SBC teams.

In essence, 2022 will be the norm for future SBC schedules, except JMU will add 1 more OOC FBS game to make it a 12 game (6 home, 6 away) schedule.

Go Dukes!

Gill didn’t really spill the beans today. When asked the question, he said he is working towards getting Marshall, ODU, and S. Miss in the league effective 2023. Maybe he was being dishonest or maybe it will indeed be another year before they join. If that is the case, JMU would play 8 of the 10 current Sun Belt teams this year.
I hope Marshall, ODU, and S. Miss get in this year so JMU doesn’t have to play so many teams in the west, many of whom are down compared to the East.

Every year is different, of course, but if JMU didn’t improve or regress from this year they would be favored over 7 of the 10 Sun Belt teams.

Going from FCS to the Sunbelt is a step up in competition, but I get a chuckle from those who think JMU will be making a big step up in national recognition.

Being the best at any level brings some recognition, but being the best in the Sunbelt won't bring that much more recognition than being the best in FCS brought.

I look forward to future success for the Dukes.

I have to disagree to an extent. In regards to the elite FBS in the P5 you are correct. However, you don't need to look too much further from App State and Coastal Carolina. There are plenty of people that had never heard of those schools. When they got a ranking that changed. They were now being mentioned, which was far from what they were before.
If we look at history, schools in the Sun Belt got very little love or recognition. However things these last few years have changed quite a lot.
We have an opportunity to keep moving the needle.
The fact that ESPN took an opportunity to speak about us, a G5 team in the Sun Belt, is a good thing.
As a conference, more teams need to do what App State, Louisiana and Coastal have been doing.
For Coastal maybe true. But I doubt there were many college football fans who hadn't heard of ASU, who didn't notice them pulling off probably the most famous college football upset of all time beating #5 Michigan, but heard of them for the 1st time when they cracked the Top 25.

Who would you want to face from the West? If the SB is forced to go divisionless for 2022, would your fan base prefer to play all of the East teams? Seems like it would be a good opportunity to get to know some of the West teams.

Yeah in a way it's a bit of a "throwaway" season with no conference championship or bowl possibilities... But at the same time it's also a good chance to hit the ground running with a schedule that boosts ticket sales and donations. I'm really hoping we get the CUSA 3 so we can get a normal SBC East schedule and then just hope whoever we get at home from the west is having a solid season when they come to town... If those three aren't able to come I just hope we get to play App, Marshall, Coastal and would like to see App State at home this year then ODU at home next year. Regardless of what happens with the CUSA 3, I hope we get App and ODU at home in opposite years.

Marshall is one of the CUSA 3.

From the west Louisiana, Troy, Texas St, Ark St. would be interesting to me. From the east I'd like to see App St, Coastal, and one of Georgia Southern/Georgia St.

After that, no strong preferences really, just happy to have an SBC schedule.

Louisiana is a must visit. Their student section is probably worse than anyones. Two cops had to stand next to them for the CCG. Great tailgate and the fans, sans students, were great and inviting. Troy and Arkansas St have really nice stadiums. Hunting season really affects the home crowd turnout.

If we have the full 14, and the away OOC game with Marsha becomes a conference game, I would prefer JMU come to Boone. Ideally for me as an App fan, I would prefer that Marsha/JMU, Coastal/ODU, and the Georgia schools are opposite home and away. We will see if Gillin can pull it off.

Ha total brain fart on Marshall there. Yeah, correction I hope neither App nor Coastal is left off the schedule if it ends up an abnormal schedule this year with just 11. And I hope App is at home with ODU at home next year in that case.

I'd pretty much agree on the most interesting teams in the west as of now, but I don't have a really strong preference there since it's hard to tell who might actually develop some hatred as time goes on.

Didn't Keith Gill say that the Sun Belt will be playing with two divisions in 2022, even if there are only 11 teams? I thought he mentioned that at the press conference.

That means we'll definitely be playing App State, Coastal, and the Georgia teams. I guess Troy is a maybe, depending on when the SBC moves them to the west. I would have to imagine that if the SBC goes to divisions in 2022, they would go ahead and unite Troy with their long-term division partners.

He said multiple times that he anticipates having divisions for 2022, but he said he doesn't wanna box himself in to anything and we'll see the circumstances and everything. He might've meant we'll use divisions either way, I could also see it being more that he anticipates 14. He didn't get in to specifics of 11 vs 14 though obviously.

IF the CUSA 3 don't join and they keep divisions, it would seem the easiest thing to do would be add JMU to the east and reshuffle in 2023, but shifting Troy west wouldn't be a shock either. Either way it would be unbalanced. From the SBC board, it sounds like they have tentative schedules ready to go for both scenarios.

Keith Gill is such a breath of fresh air as a conference commissioner. Hope the SBC can hold onto him for many, many years. Whatever happens in 2022 regarding scheduling I’m confident Gill will have done the best job possible.

I really like how much Richmond fans disliked Gill as an AD. Makes him much more likable knowing that.

I feel the same with the scheduling pairs but obviously swap our schools. AppSt/Marshall, Coastal/ODU, GaSo/GaSt opposites for H/H each year so that no matter the combination we get at least one or two marquee rivals per year. The worst would be getting Coastal, GaSo and GaSt home in one year (although conversely the alternate year of AppSt, Marshall, ODU would be MUST WATCH football for every JMU fan).

Strictly from JMU’s scheduling standpoint, I’d like ODU and Marshall at home this year. App away.

Give us Ga State at home, GA Southern away, coastal away. Then flip this arrangement on the odd numbered year. Rinse and repeat for decades.

If I were to guess for our future schedules, they'd do three pods:

ODU and Coastal
Marshall and App St
Ga St and Ga So

One from each pod will be home, one would be away. Reverse the next year, and so on and so forth.

Here's my guess for everything:
