That's my feeling too. I really have no idea the style of play Wes utilized when he was winning at UNCG but I'm guessing we're not seeing it right now. Or we're seeing it with the wrong personnel.

I know football and basketball recruiting have little in common. But it seemed that Fickell broke down a barrier when he began to get some local blue chip kids to stay home and those players began recruiting others. Cincinnati doesn't produce enough basketball talent to fill a high major roster completely, but I feel like if Wes scores a breakthrough with an elite local or Ohio kid, it will begin to attracts others. And he has to be getting more looks with the prospect of playing in the Big XII compared with the American.

Who do you think might transfer out? I don't get this notion that a bunch of guys will leave. Is it more of a general belief based on the new lax transfer rules, or do you think guys are unhappy or Miller is unhappy with them? The only player who seems like a candidate is McGinnis.

If you look at Wes at UNCG, this is what his teams were. ADJO, EFGO, TO%, free throw rate, tempo, 3pt %. They are all right in line with his last couple teams at UNCG. This team is actually better in almost every one of those categories than his last 2 UNCG teams.

This is the offense Wes runs, and this is actually a slight improvement from where it's been his entire career.

Well his team at UC should be far better than his teams at UNC. He has more talented players at every position.

And I'm not meaning to knock UNC-G. It's just a fact.

Far better? Koval and Hensley were both role players on UNCG last year and are role players on UC this year. He also had a bunch of upperclassman who were in his system for a while at UNCG. So the learning curve was smaller. His UNCG team finished above Brannen's UC team last year in kenpom.

But here's the thing. I agree this UC team is more talented and the numbers reflect that it is better than his last year UNCG team. UNCG was 108 kenpom last year, which is basically a mid-level AAC team (Tulane is 7th in the AAC kenpom right now at 115). UC is 75 kenpom...so UC is 40 spots better than his UNCG team last year.

But the combination of talent/experience keeps the teams closer in quality than talent alone might imply. Our biggest holes are also the holes you see at most programs that aren't top 50 teams... a lack of bigs that can play through contact and rebound out of area, and a lack of wings that can get to the rim and finish / draw fouls.

I think despite the Temple setback we saw big strides in the offense the prior five games and hope we see those strides evident again this week. What he's doing is very different from what Brannen tried to do on both ends. We have done a pretty great job adjusting on defense, but the offense has been slower (and our flaws more evident). Teams don't figure things out overnight unless they have insanely talented players. This team was always going to be a work in progress but it's substantially better than last season, which is a good start.

I agree that most guys shouldn't be looking to transfer out. I said McGinnis or Saunders, we are deepest at guard (MAW, Saunders, Mason, McGinnis) so if a transfer happens due to playing time it's probably going to be one of them. Given that Mason's play and minutes have been going up, I doubt he transfers, McGinnis could for the obvious reason of lack of playing time. Saunders because he is one of the worst defensive guards on the team, given his poor defense and lack of size, I could see a mutual parting of ways. Miller's system seems a better fit for big/long guards, so Saunders will probably always be a mismatch to Miller's system even if he stays.

The only reason why I don't think Saunders would get pushed out is because we will have 2 guards on the team next year (MAW and Madsen) and only one of them can run the point. I highly doubt Miller would bring that much of a headache upon himself.

I always thought most of defense was effort. Saunders has the physical gifts to be an absolute gnat on defense, he just has to want to.
