It is interesting to compare the ratio of active to total, and just scanning for active/total > 10%.

All SEC are > 10%.

B1G is about half and half, reflecting a concentration in Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Iowa (+Maryland, +Rutgers who may have benefited from moving to the B1G).

In the B12 Iowa State, KU, and K-St are < 10% as is Baylor. The three northern B12 schools thus join Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, NW, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State in a sort of farm belt exodus.

In the ACC, BC, Syracuse, Pitt, and GT are below 10%.

Some of this may reflect more of where players used to come from, vs. where they come from now. That is when the NFL was concentrated in the NE (Chicago x 2, Green Bay, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, Washington, Baltimore, San Francisco, and Los Angeles) most of their players may have come from local universities. In addition, NFL rosters have expanded in recent years.

Anyhow if we were going to form a subdivision based on the 64 Top Current Schools in four 16-team conferences.

Southern: West Division:

Oklahoma, Texas, TAMU, Missouri, Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State

Southern: East Division:

Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina.

Western: Coastal Division:

UCLA, USC, Stanford, Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Arizona State

Western: Inland Division:

BYU, Boise State, Utah, Colorado, TCU, Houston, Baylor, SMU

Northern: Western Division:

Texas Tech, OSU, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern

Northern: Eastern Division:

Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers

Eastern: Southern Division:

Memphis, FSU, Miami (FL), UCF, Florida Atlantic, Clemson, North Carolina, Duke

Eastern: Northern Division:

Pitt, BC, Louisville, West Virginia, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State

(Note demoted P5 schools: Arizona, Washington State, Iowa State, Kansas, K-State, Indiana, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Syracuse).

Promoted G5 schools: Boise State, SMU, Memphis, Florida Atlantic (Cincinnati, Houston, UCF, BYU are included in P5).

And A Second Division:

Western: Coastal Division:

Hawaii, SD State, SJ State, Fresno State, UNLV, Washington State, E Washington, Idaho

Yeah, what stood out for me is how we can see disconnects or continuity between historical and current success.

Like regarding the SEC, we see 5 of the 15 all-time leaders are SEC, more than any conference. But, in the all-time ranks they are on the low side, these five come in at 6, 7, 11, 12 and 13. So none in the top five.

But in the current list, the SEC also has 5 of the 15, but they are positioned much higher, at 1, 3, 4, 6 and 11. So three of the top four and four of the top 10.

Four of those historical leaders have a higher current rank than there all-time rank. Only Tennessee, who is not in the current top 15, is an exception.

We also see the struggles of the PAC, who historically have two of the top 15 programs, including all-time #2, but have only one in the current top 15, at that school is #11. The very fact that USC is #2 historically but #11 right now speaks to the talent drain.

On the other hand, the B1G is represented strongly in both sets of numbers, with four in the top fifteen of each lists, though albeit at reduced positions save for Ohio State.

I also have to respect the enduring talent of Miami, #10 historically and #8 currently. Miami always has talent. They must be the most poorly-coached team of the past 20 years, given their results vs their talent.
