Well, it feels a bit like the air has been let out of the balloon. JMU had built up a decent resume in the OOC schedule and then has performed poorly in CAA play.
Today feels like a fulcrum game. Another home loss would be painful and put the Dukes in the bottom tier of the CAA. A win would help erase the bad taste of recent games and get some momentum back with 2 more home games to follow.
There are a few good story lines today.
1- Chuck Falden gets to play against his former coach at Winthrop. That will be interesting to see how CoC may try to defend him and attack him on offense.
2- Pat Kelsey was in JMU’s coaching search the last two hiring cycles. I don’t know if he wasn’t offered enough money or if JMU wasn’t interested or if he wasn’t interested. What we do know is that he is more accomplished than any coach in the CAA, by far. 9 years as a coach with 4 conference titles and 3 NCAA tourney auto bids.
3- Byington coached at CoC for several years as an assistant. I’m sure some of the administration is still in place and he can reconnect pregame/postgame. Kind of like the UNCW game, it will probably mean more when the Dukes travel to Charleston and he sees all of his old stomping grounds, old friends etc.
This should be a good game, maybe even getting into the 80’s with fast pace. Kelsey has had to build almost the entire roster in his first year with only 2 returnees from last year. So this is the year to get him while he may not have all the players needed. Get him now because his team will be at the top of the CAA in the coming years for sure.
Maybe JMU never plays CoC again after leaving the CAA, but that would be a mistake. Hopefully, coach By’s connection as a former assistant coach there will keep his interest in scheduling them. It is a cool town and a cool college arena to play in. Plus CoC has a great history of success as a mid-major since moving up to D-1 hoops. It is a program JMU should want to be associated with.
Just win baby.
