Who is our next coach?

Honestly, I think Penny probably deserves another year at this point. But his leash should become significantly shorter if this season isn't salvaged in some way. But if Sean Miller wanted it, and we knew for sure he'd take it, I do not think I'd hesitate to part ways and hire him.

Mostly because of this: Penny has engrained his brand into Memphis Tigers basketball. I worry about how you can disconnect the Penny brand out of recruiting because that's what I see. The NBA pedigree, the 1Cent brand, and everything that's come with it has been a catalyst for recruiting and if that goes - does the new exposure still mean we get great recruits, or does the intermingling of the brands cause damage when he's fired in perception? (I guess this would mostly depend on what recruits are really seeing and wanting.)

But out of all the options...(Rick Pitino notwithstanding but his history and his age I'd say no)...Sean Miller would be the name recognition and history of success that would overcome that, and if we wanted out of the Penny era, I think that would be the best solution overall.

Why? What in the world makes you say he deserves another year? How many more years of this crap must we endure? He’s done nothing up to this point to show he deserves another year. His teams have progressively gotten worse over his tenure. Number 1 recruiting class, preseason top 10, and we’re sitting at 9-8 with no hope of making the tournament for the 8th straight year. Let’s give him another 3 years, he deserves it!! #sarcasm

RE: Who is our next coach?
I would not be surprised if we have a unique coach search. Like one that Penny helps with etc...

My vote is that we step out of the pre-pro-player circus for half a decade.

Lets get a decent ethical person who knows X's and O's; is a straight arrow recruiting and can run a press conference.

I know I am in a minority but the Rip Scherrer's and Tubby's of the world win more than they lose and don't embarrass us. Most of us will go to games and watch them regardless of who is coaching. Everyone here is a testament to that.

I think; Get Tony Madlock, or go get coach Stephens from SW, go get Let it Fly guy (Mike Miller) if you wanna an ex honest pro. Requirements for the job in order of importance are;
Honesty, Ethics
X's and O's
Hiring good Assistants
Recruiting
Public Relations

There is no no way in hell he would leave his successful program at Auburn to come to this dumpster fire. Not only is it a dumpster fire, it's a dumpster fire with NCAA sanctions looming. The same goes for Pitino. Stop being stupid even mentioning coaches like this.

The only one I see that might be a remote possibility is Marshall. And that is only because he was fired in disgrace... and only then if we throw 3 or 4 million dollars at him. And even then, does he still have the fire to be great? I don't know but he is the only possibility, imo, to make a quick turn around.

But whatever we do, we need to hire someone who knows WTF they are doing when it comes to coaching college basketball and stop with the ridiculous hires like Penny and Opie.

Those two actions set this program back a decade.

I'm a old guy, so I've lived through Bartow, Yates, Kirk, Finch, Tic, Jones, Cal, Josh, Tubby and Penny. I've seen a lot of ups and downs over the years, but never have I felt so utterly hopeless about the program. We have a been a downward spiral for a decade filled with drama, and there's zero indication that anything will change in the near future. I'm not even sure we are capable of making a "right" hire at this point. It's hard to see where we go from here.

It sucks.

We have similar experience then. And I agree 100% with everything you said.

If that is who they go after they might as well just keep Penny in place... And fans show up when teams are winning or at least competitive. They are not going to show up because the coach is nice and holds pleasant press conferences. If you want fans in the stands then you better put a competitive product on the court, it is that simple.

I do not think so. He would be fired with some sort of buyout agreement. UCONN fired Ollie and tried to get out of having to pay him by saying it was with cause.

At this rate recruiting will dry up anyway. You can make all the promises in the world but when you fail to deliver people sit up and take notice. It doesn't take much for one to go from Golden Boy to perpetual loser status.

I tried to think of some way to respond to that but I could only come up with "glad you're not the decision maker" or something to that effect.

RE: Who is our next coach?
It’s hard nowadays to get coaches to leave 1 program for another. The money is too good at most places. Steve Forbes isn’t leaving WF and the ACC to coach Memphis and the conference we’ll be playing in. It’s gonna be a young coach on the rise or an out of work established guy who probably has baggage. Gregg Marshall can flat out coach and would be a tremendous hire.

RE: Who is our next coach?
I agree it is much more difficult to get coaches to leave other P5 solid jobs with the salaries these days and our new conference is unknown how it affects others perceptions.

But I am not so sure on Forbes. I know someone who knows him. He has always thought the Memphis job was a bigtime job opportunity that was very appealing. Wake Forrest is a bottom tier job in ACC and is a tough job, tough recruiting, tough competition, small arena, small town, etc. Memphis is high appeal, easy recruiting, big arena, high passion, good $$, and easily can own this new league. I think we could get Forbes.

Sean Miller would be a home run hire. So would Marshall if he is hirable. They would both take it if they want to get back in. If I would have told you 4 years ago that Memphis was hiring either of these two guys after Tubby, this place would have done back flips. Houston took Sampson who had past troubles and look where they are. This would be the same thing.

Archie Miller is another option. Good coach who had a tough time at Indiana. Did well at Dayton. Steve Alford is at Nevada...he has been so so.

Damon Stoudamire is under .500 in his career at Pacific. 71-77. He is a no.

I think we need a proven head coach. Not an assistant. A known commodity that can get it done. Any assistant is a risk. It just is. We can't take a risk like that right now.

My vote: Miller, Forbes, Marshall. Get any of those and it is on.

The point is - hire a good coach - stop worrying about a big name. ( unless it is Pitino— that guy can coach anywhere

Penny will be reprimanded for this but I think he gets another year. If the Tigers don't make the NCAA next year he should resign with the understanding going into the year that he will be let go if he doesn't make the tournament. I don't know what his contract details are.

That's the worst thing you can do. Weigh your options. Have discussions with a few of the agents associated with these coaches. Put feelers out. Have a plan, including an exit strategy, before you go to war. Don't act out of emotion.
