IMO, this would be a big mistake. This will cost UNO a lot of money. Money they likely do not have.

They were to have started in 2015 before. I do not know what happened, but when they said they would add it? They got the invite to the Southland.

I took some classes at UNO back in the day. I wish them well. Their baseball games were fun to go to.

I don't either.

There’s no chance they actually end up with a team. No way they can bring in Enough fans to support an FCS team.

Yes, I remember that as well. Maybe they decided they weren’t ready back then? That’s the only explanation I can think of.

Tulane's got deep pockets, decades of tradition and a first-rate 30k on-campus stadium (which isn't close to full on a regular basis) and plays a much more familiar schedule than any Southland school.

It's pretty much apples and oranges.

The close proximity of Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana could help. McNeese travels pretty well. Northwestern St is decent. I see some of the same ole starting football is bad folks chiming on here. They could conceivably do it and generate a decent FCS program.

I hear ya, man.

I'm probably as "pro college football" as anyone (and for the record, I hope UNO does get itself a football team. The more the merrier).

Just believe starting a program and staying at the I-AA level in an NFL market makes for a really small opportunity to create anything other than minimal interest.

You’re probably right in your concerns, Pete. Still, Louisiana as a state has a heck of a lot of high school football talent within its borders. Besides, Texas is right next door across the Sabine, and a lot of Texas kids are willing to play football in Louisiana since it wouldn’t be too far for their parents to drive, especially those in the Piney Woods, the DFW Metroplex, the Golden Triangle, and the Houston area. UNO would give recruits from both states yet another option, especially considering it’s in one of the nation’s most interesting cities. So I wouldn’t count them out at all if they start up football.

Fans don't support FCS teams, the school budget and student fees support FCS teams.

If UNO wants to stay Division I long term, they may have to add football. Not a lot of options for non-football schools south of the Ohio and east of Las Vegas.

RE: University of New Orleans to consider starting football program
I wonder if the southland is applying pressure to UNO to start a program. As mentioned there aren’t many other conference options in the area. With the southland struggling for football membership, I could see them saying “hey, you need to start a football program or start thinking about independence”. I can’t think of any other conferences that would take them… maybe the ASUN? But that would be a stretch.

Isn't the school nearly bankrupt? And adding football will help this?

Alternatively, UNO is being proactive in case the Southland gets torn apart and they need to find a new home.

The Southland is at 5 football, 2 nonfootball with A&M Commerce upgrading. they're not in a position to kick anyone out.

I wouldn't say they are nearly bankrupt, but they are operating on a shoe-string. IMO, football and its expenses are a pipe-dream, or at least a bad idea.

RE: University of New Orleans to consider starting football program
New Orleans needs a combination of two things to make this work -

1) Student vote to increase their athletic fees
2) Communal support to help cover the costs of start-up for football and presumably women's soccer and/or softball

The start-up costs between facilities, equipment and similar is not Mount Everest, but there are definitely start-up costs associated with launching these programs. A student vote will help sustain the annual year-to-year costs to an extent and your hopes are that by adding football, the other sports and things such as marching band, you'll start to see an increase in enrollment which hopefully only adds to the year-to-year return on student fees.

The athletic director at New Orleans indicates they have done the feasibility study. They have to know what this costs from both part 1 (student fees) and part 2 (communal support). They do have some land on their property particularly for softball and soccer. Football? Probably too. Could be a nice public/private partnership as there has been talks for years on building a football stadium utilized by the university with the high schools playing there as well. Conceivably could be used for area high school and the university soccer programs too?

That's all of the Southland Louisiana schools tbh when it comes to budget.

RE: University of New Orleans to consider starting football program
UNO was going to start non-scholarship football before Katrina hit. So, this is no surprise. Schools have to come up with a way to attract a smaller pool of kids going to college. Lots, and I mean, lots of schools are adding sports to attract students. If UNO goes non-scholarship, you get add 100 students paying tuition. Wouldn't surprise me if some D1 schools start adding more sports to attract students. For example, you get 15-20 players for men's volleyball, but only have to offer 4 scholarships. There are schools now offering multiple teams in the same sport at the D3/advanced club level to attract students. A school in Michigan has 4 hockey teams. Could you see this happen at D1? Maybe add JV programs. JV basketball disappeared when freshmen became eligible. Could you see a return?

RE: University of New Orleans to consider starting football program
I hope to have a copy of the study next week, so take all of this with a grain of salt, but here are a few other thoughts, after talking to a few other folks. If this matters, I also used to live in New Orleans and know the area a little bit...

1) There's no way this happens without student athletic fees. There's almost zero way FCS football happens ANYWHERE without student athletic fees. If the standard for starting and maintaining a program is for fans, media rights and sponsorships to pay for everything, FCS would have MAYBE five teams in it. If this ACTUALLY happens, it's because the students, the general university budget, AND the New Orleans community decide to pay for it. There has been some political pressure at UNO to actually start this thing for a long time...we'll see if that pressure means somebody is finally prepared to open a checkbook.

2) The value prop here is a little different than Tulane. No disrespect to our Greenie friends, but Tulane...is the school for out of town kids. It hasn't REALLY been the New Orleans team since like, the 1960s. UNO is the school for locals. It's pretty communter-y and it's losing enrollment. The hope here is that UNO football would provide an affordable opportunity to see and participate in D1 football that would be HEAVILY for residents of the 504, by residents of the 504. Whether they can do that successfully is an open question, but I wouldn't exactly draw conclusions from anything that is happening Uptown for what could happen at UNO.

3) My understanding is that this would be a scholarship program that would play in the Southland Conference, with the hope to play on campus, rather than at the Tad Pad.

4) Beyond enrollment and community engagement goals, it's also correct to say that UNO hopes that having a football team would give them additional conference flexibility for the future, especially with big NCAA changes afoot.

Tim Duncan. That name sounds familiar. Didn't he play basketball at Memphis under Larry Finch?

He's 6'8".

He played hoops for Memphis State in the late 80s/early 90s, on a team or two with Penny Hardaway.

When Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans in September, Memphis hosted some UNO athletic teams that had to flee the city.
