So is the expectation that, if approved, UNO football would become the 7th Southland team after Incarnate Word leaves and Texas A&M-Commerce joins (so Houston Baptist, McNeese State, UNO, Nicholls, Northwestern State, SELA, and A&M-Commerce)?

UNO's AD is tall. But I'm sure the Southland is stoked

It seems like they had been considerng adding football for at least ten years. Hopefully, they add it so the Southland can maintain a certain number of teams (I think they need at least six?) in the sport.

He's the "original" Tim Duncan; played basketball at Memphis with Penny.

The AD mentions a feasibility study. Make it public. Show us what it will take to start a Southland football program. This will be helpful information for those on the ground who need to raise money and those on-looking that have been interested to see if program(s) like Arlington, Corpus Christi and New Orleans can add football.

JMO, but no way UNO would even consider adding I-AA football with a plan to remain in the SLC for any kind of extended basis.

It would be a death sentence for a commuter school in an NFL market where LSU will always shine 1,000 times brighter than any other college program.

I don't know. Tulane seems to be doing okay. (But yes, LSU is clearly the dominant program in the entire state of Louisiana so you're right there.)

Why would UNO leave and to which conference would they go?

Adding football could be part of a play to try and keep more students on campus on the weekends.

Big decision for college kids, stay on campus to watch a bad UNO football team vs TAMU-Commerce or do other things? Hmmmm

Where would they play? The Superdome is too big. They're not going to rent from Tulane. Tad Gormley Stadium (capacity 26,000) in City Park is available:

I don't know how they're going to pull this off. Tulane is already third banana behind the Saints and LSU. I'm not sure if there's enough interest, even with UNO being a public school.

Tulane's got deep pockets, decades of tradition and a first-rate 30k on-campus stadium (which isn't close to full on a regular basis) and plays a much more familiar schedule than any Southland school.

It's pretty much apples and oranges.

Sounds as crazy as Little Rock studying the addition of football. Who will support UNO football with the Saints and Tulane in New Orleans and LSU down the road in Baton Rouge? They get nobody at their basketball games. I just don't see it.

The close proximity of Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana could help. McNeese travels pretty well. Northwestern St is decent. I see some of the same ole starting football is bad folks chiming on here. They could conceivably do it and generate a decent FCS program.

UNO briefly fielded a club football team that played at Tad Gormley in the 2000s. Tulane even played there a couple times in the early 2000s, IIRC. Very cool, historic-looking stadium.

Right? I'm not THAT short (I'm like 5'10), but next to Duncan....yeah. I've got a body built for newsletters, that's for sure.

I'm working to get a copy of the full study. I've been told that while Gormley is a possibility, Southland officials think that facility would need some significant work, and there's plenty of land at UNO to build a modest on-campus facility, one that could potentially be leased to high schools, like UNO's other facilities.

I hear ya, man.

I'm probably as "pro college football" as anyone (and for the record, I hope UNO does get itself a football team. The more the merrier).

Just believe starting a program and staying at the I-AA level in an NFL market makes for a really small opportunity to create anything other than minimal interest.
