How can CFB programs that didn't play during COVID have Sagarin ratings?
Can someone with a better understanding of how these proprietary ratings are calculated explain this? Princeton is rated the 118th best team for the 2020-21 season and didn't play a single football game.

I gather that the initial ratings for a season are based on last year's results, but I would have figured by the end of a season the rating would only reflect the results of that season.

Ask Sagarin — his email is near the top of his home page at sagarin.com.
His answer will likely be more informative than the wild guesses of any of us.
