Why go to Dandridge when you have Duren?
Why wasn’t Bates in for Tyler at the end?
Because Bates does not play defense very well.
Bates 6’8 for 1 sec to defend a 6’6 player vs Tyler. It’s not rocket science

RE: So much for Lomax being the problem
Kenpom/T-rank say that Lomax is the worst player on the team by a large margin. In fact Lomax is ranked as the 9th worst player in the entire AAC for players who play qualifying minutes. So yea we may suck as a team, but Lomax only makes things worse.
For a fun bonus stat, before yesterdays game the East players occupied the bottom 3 spots on the team in value while Tyler Harris leads the team as the most valuable contributor.
For a not so fun bonus stat completely relevant to yesterday, Tyler also leads the team with the worst defensive rating. Probably not the guy you want guarding someone on a game winner (but obviously his offense makes him a net positive).

They are both liabilities on defense. Pick your poison.
I certainly agree offensively (and frankly, everything else) Duren is vastly superior to Dandridge.
Unfortunately for yesterday, we were down 4 good defenders in Nolley, Williams, Lomax, and Hardaway. The complexion of that last 1.0 seconds would have been completely different if any of them had been available.

RE: So much for Lomax being the problem
This is simply a poorly coached team & that’s not the fault of ALo. The school has provided Penny whatever he’s needed and Penny has managed to take that investment & assemble a middle of the road AAC program. He has a team loaded with 4 & 5 star talent… FMR NBA assistants, HOF coaches, FMR NBA All Stars & FMR area HS coaches all serving to help & assist; & and a city, despite the dysfunction & mediocrity, that still overwhelmingly supports this program; yet Penny’s cannot capitalize & put a team on the floor that can beat Murray State, Tulane or East Carolina. His practice facilities are top notch… the forum, a state of the art arena. What else does he need? This program clearly suffers from a failure of leadership. Penny knows what he wants but isn’t capable of leading these young men & getting the most from them.
I suppose he will be assembling a new team next year & go through the same idiotic cycle again.

Penny’s teams do the same things. Drama everywhere. Make the same dumb mistakes. Play carelessly. Turn the ball over. Are lost on offense. The substitution patterns are ridiculous.
Penny is the common denominator.

You are 100% wrong. The common denominator is Williams. End of story.
DeAndre is obviously the most important player on the team, yes. The problem with this season, however, was the player pecking order that Penny established at the beginning of the season that destroyed team chemistry--specifically his treatment of Emoni Bates. Emoni should have never been thrust into the starting lineup ahead of Landers Nolley. And it was bad for Bates because all his weaknesses were exposed early and often.
Penny overvalued Bates, Dandridge, and Lomax; but undervalued Minott and Harris.
If we compare last years team to this one, besides Duren being quite a bit better than Moussa, Timberlake has been about on par with Baugh, Emoni has not been as effective as Boogie, and no one has been able to fill the all around void left by DJ (although, Minott has been very good). The biggest difference, to me, is how much better last-year's defense was compared to this year. I think much credit should be given to Boogie, DJ, and Baugh in that respect.

Keep that team together and swap Moussa for Duren and we are much better today. Too much turnover again. No chemistry. It’s all on the coach.

Well, we killed Alabama and Wichita, and haven't had a good game since. The issue is that Penny is dependent on a 6'9 power forward to be our point guard. IF we have a point guard on the level of any of our other 4* recruits we are easily a Sweet 16 team.

Penny is slow out of the gate. Bates got off to a great start and it was easy to think that he would continue on that path; not hit such a big wall against good competition. The problem is that the returning veterans including Williams still tried to do it the same was as the beginning of last year; they hadn't learned their lesson.
The team with everyone healthy is better than last year's team. Everyone was on the same page before Williams got hurt and we destroyed two good teams. I fully expect us to destroy everyone the rest of the season (including Houston) IF Williams is healthy.

It's really not on the coach. LQ and Nolley are exactly the same as the beginning of last year. Williams also started the same way as everyone else. They were all on the same page before Williams got hurt.

Drop the mic and close up the thread.
This a perfect summation of two truths.
1. Why it is time for Penny to go
2. Why Memphis will be able to land another good coach

No one is suggesting missing players takes away your right to mock and disparage, but it does matter
Again, team still should have won yesterday
But did play without
Nolley
Williams
Hardaway
Lomax
Lawson
And due to a poor decision for most of the second half, Minott
Should have won but it matters

Ya. We are 9-7. It is not like we are 9-4 with our struggles starting after players going down… it’s been a roller coaster all year, really all 4 years of Penny now.
