2021-2 AAC Directors Cup Thread (UCF League Champs!)
Fall Directors Cup standings are out for NCAA Divison 1 and Tulsa leads the way among the 8 ranked teams of the 12 teams playing in the AAC this fall.

The Covid rule may cause some controversy with teams qualifying for a football bowl game receiving only 5 points, even if they were not the squad responsible for the Covid cancellation. Normally 45 points are awarded for a bowl win and 25 points for a bowl loss.
Application of this rule leaves ECU nearly alone at the bottom of the standings. And even more ironically, it leaves Hawaii tied with Memphis at 55 points, both just outside the top 100.
Had Hawaii been able to play the game, both teams would have made the top 100, and had Memphis won (or been scored for the record as a win) they would have ranked 2nd among AAC teams.
Incoming Rice (defending top points scorer from CUSA) ranks 2nd among all current and announced AAC teams.
USF (defending top points scored from AAC) drops to 7th in the current AAC standings.

Directors Cup assigns points based on postseason play in all sports. All sports are weighted (more or less) equally.

2021-2 AAC Directors Cup Thread (Memphis,ECU controversy?)
Also speaking of controversy, we need to offer congratulations to our on again, off again, once and future AAC “member” SDSU, for (according to the published standings) becoming the first school to make the postseason in BOTH FBS *and* FCS football! Wow!

That unique double-dip shows them as 49th overall. I don’t think the judges will allow that one once things go final. Still, cool flex, Aztecs!!

Looks like the points gurus got tripped up on “SDSU”.

San Diego State from the Mountain West also “got” South Dakota State’s points for finishing 3rd in FCS

:)

Once they fix that, it should move Tulsa, Rice, and UCF “up” one notch.

I've never really read up on this. Explain it to me like I'm 5. What do the directors cup standings mean? Is there money involved or something? How do they determine what sports are included and how many points you get for postseason appearances? Noticed that football and basketball are counted, baseball is not, but cross country is?

Who cares. Take this garbage to the the women’s tennis board or somewhere else where Rice is relevant. Private school endowments, maybe?

1 Every NCAA team sport counts
2 A National title is worth 100 points
3 Just making the NCAA postseason is worth approximately 25 points
4 Point systems vary by sport but the further you advance the more points you earn
5 At the end of the school year the school with the most points wins a big shiny trophy (No $) and bragging rights

Stanford won the Division I trophy for years in a row (they field TONS of team sports) but they tweaked the rules to limit how many sports you can actually count per school. And with the new rules, Texas won it last year. Those rules won’t limit any G5 schools other than maybe the Ivy League.

Baseball counts but you won’t see it on the fall sports tally sheet. They tally points three times a year, after the fall and winter spots, then the final results after the spring.

Bragging rights are nice when your revenue sports that everyone watches on TV are on the downswing but your non-rev teams are kicking butt.

Special Congratulations to Cincinnati for having the highest AAC National finish in any sport so far - 4th in Football is dammed impressive!

Big 12 is an excellent all-sports conference and looking at the standings from this and previous years I just realized that Bob Bowlsby was looking Cincinnati square in the eye when he made reference to working with “some” of the incoming members to help them bring up their standards in some areas to the Big 12 level.

Cincinnati was 9th in the American in the Directors Cup last year. Definitely an outlier among the four schools heading to B12.

Football is in good shape, “it drives the bus” - it got you to the next level. Now would be a good time to give some attention to your Olympic sports so you’re not driving such a beater of a VW microbus around on that next level.

To be fair, you just said in the post before this one:

Bragging rights are nice when your revenue sports that everyone watches on TV are on the downswing but your non-rev teams are kicking butt.

Cincinnati is not on the downswing in the most important sport (only important sport if we're being honest) of all.

100% agree, Directors Cup is a nice consolation competition if you’re not in the CFP or NYD.

It’s also nice if you’re the kind of fan or administrator who likes to tout athletic excellence across all sports.

But yes that’s a small segment of people. The Olympics get great ratings partly because they *only* come on every four years and that’s plenty for most folks.

I just remember hearing Bowlsby’s comment right after the announcement and wondering who and what specifically he was referring to. Cincy will do great at the next level, they’ve already proven they belong there.

The (almost) final Season Rankings are out. These will change one more time once Baseball is added in.

66 UCF 350.5

86 Tulsa 220.5
88 SMU 208.5
96 Memphis 192.0
98 Houston 189.0
101 +Rice 179.5
(104 UConn 167.0*)
108 South Fla 158.5

130 Navy 128.0
131 Cincinnati 124.0
149 +Charlotte 103.5
168 +UNT 91.5
173 +UTSA 88.0
188 +UAB 75.0
196 Wichita 74.5
209 +FAU 60.0

252 Temple 34.0
288 Tulane 28.5
291 ECU 13.5*

*ECU and UConn will both receive 64 points for making the baseball super regionals, will move UConn in to the top 100 and ECU into the top 200.

Texas clinched their second straight title overall, they lead Stanford by 97 points. With both teams in Omaha, the maximum points Stanford could make up would be just +27.
