More good news- football
In addition to making what on paper is the best Defensive hire ever at Memphis, Silverfield is bringing in the Mac Freshan of the year as a transfer:

Hopefully the OC can be one more home run hire, with two standout sophomores “returning” it may make it easier to get an up an comer to call the plays

Huge get. Now does Thomas or Clark transfer? I also think our lack of running game was due more to our O-line than due to the ability of our backs.

We had 3 NFL backs in the team at one time a few years ago , I hope we have one or two now- there is no reason for anyone to transfer due to opportunity at Running Back — does not mean they won’t transfer but it is not like the QB position

Thomas was never transferring. I dont remember who started that goofy rumor.

Not sure how good Gibson, Henderson & Gainwell would have done with our OL from the last 2 yrs. Better than what we achieved no doubt but our recent OL play has made it a real challenge to sustain a running game.

Not sure how Pollard/Taylor would have done either

Gibson, Henderson and Gainwell had a lot of plays that didn't gain much yardage. The difference is that the runs where Clark, Watkins and Weaver were gaining 5-15 yards, the backs you mentioned would have gained 15-60 yards on many of them.

At this point, the only "good news - football" I'm looking for is BigXII round deux, and we are included.

Our running game was good until the Thomas fumble issues.

Thomas got passive and didn't run as hard.

The other backs were either tip toers, slow or both.

But our line took a step back as well.

The way folks around here wig out because we lost 6 games makes me wonder how they’d react to a vast upgrade in competition in the Big 12. Are they willing to see us go 4-8 for awhile?

Thomas ran hard and was successful until his fumble problems. I don't think he got passive. I figure he was told that 1 more fumble would keep him on the sideline for good. I would say overly careful rather than passive, and yes, that makes a difference to me.

Two hands on the ball all the time.

For anyone that may be interested, here is what the NIU message board had to say...

Ducker Enters Portal

I linked the page where they learn it's Memphis. Pretty classy bunch of fans.

YEP----I am---I would rather go 4-8 playing real teams---than 6-6 playing weak sisters

Same here. There will be growing pains with the step up in the level of competition. The OL's and DL's in that league are on a different level.

Except for Kansas...whose level is the other direction.

There were quite a few cross games between the BigXII and AAC last year.

I don't recall the AAC getting smoked.
