A 7th power basketball league
If the MW could convince Gonzaga, St. Mary’s and either of San Francisco or Wichita State to join, the WCC would be gutted and the MW could make a claim to be a 7th power conference in basketball on par with the Pac-12.
Would these schools consider it and would the MW be interested?

I’ve considered this scenario too. Gonzaga seems to like calling the shots in the WCC but joining forces with the MWC would grant them long time security.

Gonzaga is the only one who adds anything significant to the MWC.

Gonzaga is interesting.... WCC at a crossroads already....
They will be losing BYU #24 in KP

This year Gonzaga only plays these 2 schools once....
San Diego #192 in KP
Portland #283 in KP

they would either have to play those 2 teams to get up to 16 games(making it a round robin again), or expansion. With not many good options out there for expansion.

It is an interesting question. WCC/Gonzaga could go to 14 games?? Some teams can fill the holes by completing the round robin OOC?? Gonzaga will call the shots but they are being pushed closer toward the MW. How viable is basketball independence (I suspect not very)?

The problem for Gonzaga is the 2 OOC games they'd add there still won't be on the level of BYU. Also, you start getting into January and not much of a market for OOC games then.

I don't think basketball independence is viable at all.

Gonzaga has shown that they can excel in the tournament, rankings, recruiting, attendance, etc. as part of the WCC. WCC is a great fit of like-minded institutions.

Gonzaga schedules excellent OOC games, so the WCC schedule (whether or not there is expansion or 14 or 16 games) isn't really an obstacle to continued success. Probably helps, frankly.

I'm sure BYU wouldn't mind to play Gonzaga each year OOC, if Gonzaga wants it.

Narrative or storyline "Powers" - beyond the Autonomy five conferences - will always be subjective.

"Power 6," "Major 7," (whatever you want to call yourselves) loses the point of what "Power" really means.

No one in the autonomy (i.e. Power 5) group will acknowledge you - as part of them.

Big East says otherwise.

But your larger point about breaking into the club is valid.

It's interesting though. For programs like USF and St Mary's- losing BYU could easily be the difference between making the tourney and not making it.

I'm not so sure about BYU scheduling Gonzaga. If Big 12 goes to 20 conference games, they'd have already 23-25 games scheduled between B12 conference play, exempt tournament, and conference challenges. Then add in Utah and Utah State and up to 27 already. Schedule fills up really fast.

The Old Big East was part of the club. Not the new Big East. I realize that Fox tries to promote their asset as a "power" but that's not the case. It's just a self-given nickname.

lol. If it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and acts like a duck, guess what, it's a duck.

Big East is absolutely a power conference. Go look at any bracketology and you're going to find 6-7 teams in from the Big East.

Yeah, you don't have to be Autonomy to be power in basketball.

4 ranked teams and projected 7 teams in the tournament. That's competitive with the Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC, and better than the ACC.

There is absolutely no difference between the AAC P6 or the NBE P6.

Why not use another name?

Say the new Big East is a "Really Good League"?? Using the word "Power" just misses the mark for what that word means.

Then lets also acknowledge that we are using the word "Power" in two completely different connotations.

The A5 is a different kind of "Power" than the new big east is.

There's nothing wrong with separating what the P5 means from these other promo uses with the word Power.
