Yup. Just came to post it myself.

Also...not to pat myself on the back here but...I kinda called this one too.

So, that opens up another slot (I think).

Too bad Jerome Palm just committed to Valparaiso. His size would have been greatly welcomed. Granted....maybe Martice Mitchell is actually going to show up (not likely).

As for guys who already have an offer on the table and Coach wants to get deeper at the post, the size really isn't there. Skylar Robinson is 6'8" and is a JUCO transfer (junior). Bryant Selabangue is also a JUCO transfer but a sophomore one and stands 6'9". I'll have to relook over what I wrote up about these guys but I don't recall being overly impressed with either of them.

Takai Emerson-Hardy, if I recall, I kinda liked but he's 6'7". Same with Victor Panov (6'7"). Actually, I really liked Panov even though he's getting zero attention other than from Burno.

There's a couple others, 6'6" Mohamed Toure who I initally wrote off because he had offers from both Army AND Navy. But he's still uncommitted. I liked him but he just doesn't help much in the post when we might need some actual muscle.

Then again, if we're looking now at HS freshmen, adding yet another big is just adding more of the same. We also don't exactly have a ton of guys in that SF mold so maybe Toure could be a guy who lands in our lap and is better than expected.

Same goes for Mamborou Mara who stands 6'7". I recall being intrigued by him and he was a later offer so I wasn't sure what to make of him.

If Burno wants to add a guard scorer, especially one to replace Powell, he has to go after Anthony Roy. That kid can score and might pair real well with Coit coming into the program.

The other two names I didn't mention were Derrick Claxton (6'6" SG) and Jason Drake (6'2" PG) barring any late offers that might come out of this.

Drake choose prep school and is now a 2023 recruit.

I think you're confusing him with Jaylen Drane from Simeon.

This is Jason Drake from Detroit.

Meh...

Other than having him on the roster as some kind of veteran presence, he doesn't provide much.

He is pretty beefy though.

I dunno. Kid looks like a basketball player. I think a "pretty beefy" "veteran presence" who actually can shoot the ball well and rebound would be a real help to any team, much more so NIU's team.

He may not be the second coming of LeBron James, but man.... he looks like he belongs in D1 basketball --- not something that can be said of practically every recruiting class for a long time.

For sure. I mean he averaged 9 points a game coming off the bench for a team that won 5 games.

But, he's a strong body who maybe we can use to throw 5 fouls against some team's big guy.

He's Kingsley Okanu.

I am curious what happened to him. He had almost no impact on the court then disappeared from team for 2nd half of season.

Did he have a falling out with Coach?
Was he unhappy with playing time?
Did get get injured and have 2nd thoughts?

Yeah, it appears following Coach Burno from ASU doesn’t seem to have worked on any level.

I was under the understanding that May 1 was the portal deadline and if a player wasn't in the portal by then, he would not be eligible.

And now that I say it out loud...

clearly he's going to a D-II or D-III school.

For a kid who's spent his whole life living in either Louisiana, Texas or Arizona, I'm sure DeKalb in January is not all it's touted to be.

But we still have Crump.

We will always have Crump.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
To the best of my knowledge:

Guards
Kaleb Thornton
Zion Russell
David Coit
Keshawn Williams
Taku Youngblood
Armandas Plintauskas
Zarique Nutter
Darweshi Hunter

Forwards
Anthony Crump
Xavier Amos
Yanic Niederhauser

That's 11 players.

So, assuming Mitchell isn't coming to NIU (which, at this point, I'm not sure but if he is...there's definitely room for him and his Twitter profile pic is still of him in a Huskie uniform), Coach needs to fill two more spots.

We're crazy thin on the post. I actually quite like our guard collection. But we have neither depth nor experience in the post outside of Anthony Crump (who as always been listed as a guard but has played inside for Burno and there's simply no way he's not going to be a forward going...well....forward).

I really wish Burno could have gotten Jerome Palm (JUCO). I have no idea how good he might be but I guarantee we could have used his size. And some of those offers have been there a long time so you wonder about the shelf life and if there's any communication there anymore.

I will say that I liked the video of the Russian kid (Panov). He's strong and athletic. I've also liked Anthony Roy this whole time.

Adding those two would be real nice but it doesn't really help us add size on the post. Both Amos and Niederhauser are tall, but you'd have to expect some growing pains if they're going to be counted on for substantial minutes. Maybe not. Maybe Amos comes in and dominates right out of the gate. Obviously, Sparks did so for Ball State last year but he wasn't alone in the post and is still a bit of a unicorn.

Looks like a good pick up. Had an offer from Georgetown it looks like coming out of high school before heading Juco. Some decent size that we needed badly.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
Hmmm...

I just wrote something up about this pickup and for some reason it vanished. Maybe I hit preview. I dunno...

Anyway, the gist of what I wrote:

He's big. 6'9"/6'10". And he's a center. 2* recruit out of Virginia Academy.

So, yes, he is a much needed addition to our front court and has some college/D-1 experience. He played in 9 games at St. Bonaventure but only averaged about 4 minutes per game.

Without going back to look it up, I want to say at Harcum College, he started all 18 games and averaged around 23 minutes while scoring 10 ppg and pulling down 9.9 boards and blocking 4.3 shots per game. He was just bigger than anyone else on the court so he had numbers that reflected that. Shot like 62% from the field (all near the basket) and 64% from the line (I want to say he shot just shy of 100 FTs so you do the math on roughly how many he made).

He was born in Lagos, Nigeria which is the largest city in Africa and hometown to my favorite basketball player of all time...Hakeem Olajuwan.

Fun Fact: At Harcum, he played with Yazid Powell who, if you all remember, recently de-committed from NIU to enroll at Buffalo. This was after signing a LOI....

That Harcum team went 17-1 and average almost 98 points per game and had 6 players averaging double digit points (and a 7th who just missed that mark with 9.3). I have to assume, if you played on that team and ever passed the ball, you weren't going to get it back.
