- JUCO Sophomore - 6’10” - PF - 2* recruit from O.S.G Echnaton (born in Almere, Netherlands) - Hillsborogh CC (Hillsborogh County, Florida) - Palm started his college career at Daytona State College (JUCO) and plays this year at Hillsborogh CC. This year for the Hawks, Palm has played in 22 games (7 starts) averaging 15.1 minutes and 8.9 ppg shooting 53% from the field (28.6% 3PT - 2 of 7) and 59.4% FT (19 of 32). To be honest, when I watched his videos, I was resigned to us getting him. He’s huge. He’s built like an NBA player. Big, super strong, and looks like a grown man. He’s athletic, runs the floor well, and can bully the opposition inside. I figured if Burno is wanting to put up some wins next year, he’s got the guards to do it, he needs muscle inside and this guy provides it. But then I looked at the numbers and my opinion started to change. Now granted, he could have had injury concerns keeping him out of the lineup. But only 7 starts so far is concerning. Also, his shooting away from the rim is troublesome. Sure, he can step back and hit a 3 from time to time…and that’s all fine and dandy. But his FT shooting this year is barely above Crump-level. I checked his numbers at Daytona SC and they are better…but not much. Coming from The Netherlands, I kind of wonder how finished this guy is and if there’s more here than is apparent. Yeah, he’s huge and athletic. But is he at all reliable? Really, if Burno could improve his FT up to about 70%, he’d probably be a pretty good guy to have in the MAC, which doesn’t really have a ton of guys like this (and when someone does…it matters). Also, we (at this point in the game) only have 1 or maybe 2 more scholarships available. A guy like this...maybe they could get as a walk-on. I just like some other guys better than this guy, but then again…maybe those guys are leaning hard in another direction and Burno knows that.

NIU is his only offer so far.

His sister's name is Rosie.

That was too easy.

Based on his late season surge, I have to think Amos
is close to being a 3 star recruit now. He has played really well
in the City Championship. Hope this continues in the
State tournament.

NIU Recruiting Update - HS Senior

Yanic Konan Niederhäuser - HS Senior - 6’9” - PF - 2* recruit from Ehingen Uprising (a team in German but born in Fräshels, Switzerland) - Ok…where to start. This kid is tall and lanky. I’ve seen him listed at 6’10” but he’s got big hair so maybe they aren’t sure. He seems athletic. Anytime I see a kid from Europe, I assume he started out playing soccer and that really helps with footwork. Nevertheless, he looks to move really well for as tall as he is. He’s not an explosive player or jumper. He doesn’t play all that physical but he’s aggressive. He’s got a decent enough shot from the perimeter to keep defenders honest, imo. He’s also playing for the Swiss U18 squad. The first video I watched was from FIBA and some U18 tournament. He looked dominant but he was also like 6 inches taller than almost anyone on the floor. In other words, there was almost nothing to gain from the video. Now, the second video I watched, I liked him more. I think the team he plays for a team in the NBBL which is the “highest German basketball league for players under 19”. The team he’s listed as playing for (Ehingen Uprising) isn’t in that league but is in ProA, which is a 2nd division team. I’ve also seen him listed as playing for Uprising SmartBall and I think that’s the team he’s playing for in the NBBL video, but I can’t find evidence that team even exists, let alone is part of that league. Anyway…he looks better in this video as the competition looks a little better and it highlights certain attributes (ie, inside scoring, outsides scoring, rebounding, steals, etc). He appears to be active away from the ball and have good instincts. He’s aggressive (as I said earlier) and finds his way going toward the basket. He can dribble the ball comfortably in the open court and, like I said, step behind the line and knock down a 3.

Man…this kid is intriguing and is the 3rd in a row that Burno has made an offer to from Europe (depending on what part of Russia is in Europe). I’m betting he’s raw but he’s athletic and tall and you can’t teach that. He does have one other offer on the table from Bryant which he got back in August. So, he’s not gotten a ton of attention but, not playing for an academy here in the states probably hampers that a little for a 2* kind of guy. I’d also like to point out that Burno seems to be targeting post players. Palm, Panov and now Niederhäuser (the three Europeans).

Which means either that Mitchell is not coming next year or he is stockpiling bigs, which isn't a bad thing in the MAC.

For what it's worth, Mitchell's profile pic on his twitter account is of him in an NIU uniform.

Also, as I've kind of been speculating about, I wonder if this has more to do with Osten than it does Mitchell.

Osten has been completely absent from the bench for over a month and if he is not on the team anymore, then they are losing 3 of their 4 post players and the one they're keeping, has been hurt a majority of the season (speculation) and will probably still be considered a freshman next year.

So, he has a ton of guards (and ones that can score) but he's really thin (and it could be thinner especially if you consider experience) in the post.

It almost makes you hope Crump is coming back for something like his 8th year (I'm not convinced he's ever going to leave the program).

It’s completely a guards game. Average bigs are ok especially in the MAC conference. We don’t currently and likely not next year either have enough guards than can score over 12pts a game. Also they must be able to make threes regularly

I mean, its not worth it to hash out who will and won't do what next year.

But Williams can and should score about 20 points a game (15+, let's say). Thornton is currently averaging 8.6 and showed improvement from last year.

They'll also be adding Yazid Powell who, yes...JUCO...but still..., just scored his 1,000th point in college. They're also bringing in David Coit who has shot 188 three pointers this year and has made 50% of them. He has 701 points on the season.

Those guys will both come in as JUCO transfers (Powell as a junior and Coit as a sophomore).

I'm also hoping they bring in Anthony Roy who is a 41.5% shooter from behind the arc and is averaging 25 points per game. But, it seems like Burno may be leaning heavier on the bigs right now. So, who knows.

Anyway, the point is, they're losing Hankerson (probably) but, he is bringing in some guys who are scorers, which, outside of Thorpe, Montgomery couldn't seem to do.

Obviously, no one knows if either of those guys will continue to succeed at the next level. But in reshaping the roster, he's targeting guys who can score.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
NIU Recruiting Update - Incoming Freshmen

Here's what I initially wrote:

Taku Youngblood - COMMITTED - 6’1” - PG - HS Senior - 2* recruit from St. Thomas More (Montville, CT - born in Japan) - Youngblood is kind of interesting in that I think he’s a good basketball player. He’s not big and I don’t think he’s a PG. He passes well, he shoots really well and seems to have a pretty good basketball IQ. I just think he’s better suited as a SG and I don’t know if he’s got the size to pull it off. Nothing, other than his jump shot, stands out to me. But his jumper is really good and pure. In addition to NIU, Youngblood has not received any additional offers.

I never was overly impressed with him but he seems like a decent player. I did notice he recently received an offer from Colorado State (February 25) and that makes me think 1) there's something here I'm not seeing (very possible) and 2) Coach Burno got a recruit who had an offer from a really good mid-major program.

So, I reserve judgement on Youngblood and will look to see if I can come up with any more information or video on him.

I will say this, in a recent video I saw (posted in November), he seems taller to me than I initially felt. And, if he's actually 6'1" or 6'2", he can definitely play as a SG (he's not a PG).

Another thing, I think he's probably a really good outside shooter (highlight videos are not the best reflection of an overall player's ability) so it seems Burno is trying to load up on guys who are threats from the outside.

There are some other guys I liked better but some of them were JUCOs so maybe going with more high schoolers is what he wants to do.

I still don't know how many slots he has available to him. From my best guess, Burno has anywhere from 0 to 2 remaining slots to fill. I personally would focus on bigs if there is still scholarships. But, there's a real good reason why I'm not a college basketball coach.

When I see a player born in Japan or Germany, I just assumed he/she is an Army brat that moved from that country before they turned 2.
I don't know if Taku is an Army brat or not, but he must have stayed in Japan for awhile, half of his Twitter posts are in Japanese.
Always good to have teammates that share different views and approaches.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
NIU Recruiting Update:

Zarique Nutter - COMMITTED - 6’5” - SG - JUCO Freshman - 2* recruit from Clarendon College - Nutter is from Newark, NJ and attended The Patrick School (a prep school in Hillside, NJ). Okay, here’s where things look odd. Nutter transferred to Saint Peter’s but was dismissed from the team early in December for reasons unreported. On the same day as Nutter’s dismissal from the team, Saint Peter’s also suspended KC Ndefo, who is one of their better players. So, is he still an actual option for NIU? I’m guessing he might not be as Coach Burno has seemingly been targeting high character guys to the program and Nutter has some baggage. Again, I have no idea what that “baggage” might be and that’s neither a pro nor a con, but it doesn’t look to be complimentary. I guess I’ll just leave it at that. Before transferring to Saint Peter’s, Nutter had additional offers from Tarleton State and Robert Morris.

Interestingly. Maybe a 2nd change is what he needs.

Currently, in 27 games played (all starts) for Clarendon (8-21), Nutter is averaging 28.7 minutes and 19.9 ppg and 8.6 rpg shooting 53.4% from the field (28.3% 3PT - 13 of 46) and 77.3% FT (133 of 172).

I like those rebound numbers to go with some inside scoring. He's apparently got a knack for getting to the free throw line. He's 16th in the country (JUCO) in free throw attempts.

I did come across some video of him playing in, what I'm assuming is a summer tournament for Clarendon, and he's got real good size for a guard. He's big and strong and goes to the basket with strength. He's definitely a guard who does his share of scoring inside and he's got the size to pull it off. He obviously doesn't shoot much from the outside but will on occasion. If I were to come up with any kind of comparison...it might be a bigger and stronger version of Darius Beane. I want to say Beane was 6'3" and wasn't all that strong. Nutter is definitely bigger and stronger and he plays with an attitude.

He might have something to prove after his dismissal from Saint Peter's.

So, now...

I'm guessing (sans any unforeseen transfers), Burno has anywhere from 0 to 1 more scholarship to fill.

I'm going to say it again...I expect it to be a post player so that probably means it'll be a 5'9" point guard.
