RE: Minds changing about Penny
I think Penny is good, but will be great! He’s learning college coaching “on-the-job” and is getting better every day. He will be a coaching legend before he is done.

I've had my doubts but have decided that in time if he sticks with it he will be a great coach.

He's willing to make adjustments to his style of play and coaching staff while recruiting lots of great athletes.

Bringing in Larry Brown this year was/is a clear sign that Penny wants to get better as an Xs and Os guy, too.

He could develop into a great coach based on what I see thus far.

Agree. Not just the X’s and O’s - how to be an effective leader. From my observations, the most effective coaches generally don’t try to be great friends with the players.

I was gonna say "good", but then I noticed the actual question asked what he WILL be. So I said "great", even though I don't think that's true now. I think it WILL be.

RE: Minds changing about Penny
I think Penny is obviously a great recruiter but is a mediocre coach at best. Not sure he'll ever be a good or great coach. He let's loyalties get in the way of being objective & it has cost Memphis several games each year he's been here, at least indirectly. With objectivity, Boogie would still be here & we'd have a serviceable PG. With objectivity, Penny could have recruited a top PG. He could be a good coach if he could be objective.

I think he could be a great coach.

I don't know if he wants to though.

Let's see if he stays in coaching after "his guys" move on. I think he may bow out, and that's fine.

If he decides to stick with this at that point, he will go on to accomplish great things. We'll see.

Yeah. Despite the improved play you still have to be dissappointed that it took injuries to see Timberlake should play over Alo and Minott deserved regular pt over some of the guys he was playing. Honestly this was obvious to me and many others with a very small viewing sample.

Timberlake was pretty terrible at the beginning of the season, though; not turning a corner until Tulane game really; and I'm still not sure he's not better off the ball, cutting and slashing. Minott, however, has been pretty awesome from day 1.

That's why he got so many minutes from day 1?

My comment was an observation, not necessarily commentary on Penny. I was not disappointed that he didn't start Timberlake at PG earlier, but I was disappointed that Minott was not getting more time.

Since some have compared Penny to Pastner 2.0, Minott's situation reminded me of DJ Stephens. The eye test always told us that he should be playing more his first 3 years, but he didn't make it into the starting lineup until his senior season. Of course, Penny seems to have figured out Minott quicker than Pastner figured out DJ.

Minott is way more skilled than DJ. In fact I’d argue that Pastner played Stephens too much at the end. Particularly in that Michigan St game where he should have gone big against that big team. DJ at 6-4 180 was put into a bad situation.

I get it but at minimum he has the same talent as Alo with 8 extra inches of height. And he was a freakin 5 star. That isnt a hard decision on who to prioritize on development. Virtually no other coach picks Alo in that battle.

RE: Minds changing about Penny
Minott is a talent and could be a 1+done.
But Penny and staff have said that he wasn't putting in the work to earn playing time to start the season.
It was a life lesson the young man needed, and it seems to have made a difference.
Kudos to the staff for developing the young man mentally and physically, and for not playing favorites.

Timberlake has been coming back from injury all season.
He was horrible shooting and ball handling early in the year.
Now he is much improved.
Kudos to the staff for properly diagnosing his injury, and for developing the young man.

Neither should have been starting early in the year, but they both could now.
