Bates played great in the game, but it is clear he is not yet ready to be in the closing line-up. When he gets there the team will be better for it. Let's hope he becomes good enough for that sooner than later. Probably sometime after he gains 15 or 20 lbs.

He is not going to gain 15-20 lbs by March, you can put that out of your mind.

Nor does he need to to be a difference maker in the NCAA tourney this year.

It was so nice to see that first 3 drop…I thought he’d be fine after that. Then the play where he battled on the floor for the loose ball was huge! The lob to Durant was pretty and not rushed. Dude can shoot free throws too….they were much needed.

Because of how young he is it is very likely he does not put on a ton of weight. But a full year of college ball plus a an entire summer of training will still do wonders for him. He could very possibly be 3 to 4 years away from putting on that kind of muscle mass.

Or consider Jayden. I'm sure Penny had him in the weight room from the word go, but only last summer did the muscle mass get added. Your body adds muscle at its own pace and maturation level.

Maybe not in very tight games. But in games where we are trying to ice it - he's one of the best FT shooters on the team.

Bates will get there — he’ll add weight when his body is ready to stop growing taller …it’s our job to make him comfortable in Memphis so he wants to continue his process here.

He is really who I was thinking about in regards to Bates. Jayden was pretty thin as well as a freshman and was 2 years older than Bates. It seems like most guys start being able to fill out in 20-22 year old age range.

Depends on the kid I guess...

Malcom came in looking like he does now.

And Duren is only 1 month older than Bates.

Of course it depends on the kid. Duren and Bates are obviously built completely different.

Bates has a frame that is much more Kevin Durant like while Duren has a frame that is much more Dwight Howard like.

Bates looks like putting on 30+ pounds of muscle will be a legit job for him and take a very coordinated meal plan and workout schedule. Duren looks like he could put on 30 pounds of muscle on a Kale and Seaweed diet.

lol agree two different body types.

Prolly everyone has heard this but Durant couldn’t benchpress a bundle of toothpicks at the combine. Now he can

Emoni was pressing in the first few weeks. Who could blame him? The hype was over-the-top. He's too talented to struggle for long. The game will slow down for him and I believe he'll have some monster games. I just hope the fans give him some time.

Same with Ja Morant, two idiots tell him he is better back on the bench and all I read from Calkins and MG and others was shame on the Grizz fans, it was two idiots.

And every single fanbase has that small subset of unrealistic and idiotic fans, it is in no way unique to Memphis.

I assure you that you can find a small number of Alabama fans who are saying Nick Saban is past his prime and it is time for him to go...

We’ve got 100-200 posters here? Is there a secret forum I’m unaware of?

Whatever the number, I think it’s way more than a subset. Many of my neighbors are sports fans. They are also perfectly normal (afaik), grounded, productive people. But when these fanatics start talking about their sports teams, they suddenly become unrealistic and idiotic (especially the Ole Miss clown). It’s the nature of the beast. They probably think the same of me.
