D wasn't great, but still.

Q2 win - that's all that matters.

Murray State I wrote off as they were hot...

Then Tulane I wrote off as they were hot...With some reservations.

Now Cinci I am more inline to think we need to do something to clean this up. Everyone cannot collapse when the ball gets into the paint.

Memphis is just doing a terrible job this year on switching---to the point where they might need to just get away from it--especially on the perimeter.

Too many times on the switch, someone is getting lost up top and dudes are being left wide open.

I agree. And while Cindy is really good at creating switching situations, that's something that virtually any coach can draw up to exploit our team's weakness. It's the soft spot in our defensive armor. Gotta fix it.

I think Penny saw yesterday with the defense he runs he can play small and make it work...Just like he did last year...Especially if you have Minott and Williams in the game.

Last year Cisse was such an offensive non-factor that he just pulled his minutes...Now with Duren we shall see how he handles it. Seems like Duren can be competitive guarding the switch.

Said the same thing during the game. Saw many examples of someone getting lost during a switch. We still need to do a better job of rotating on offense, setting up better screens on defense, and calling out screens on offense so that players don’t run into a wall.

Also we need to show that game film on how to setup a screen because cincy did a much better job on screens than we did.

Still feels great to beat cincy but work still needs to be done.

Penny, in after game interview, said the freshman get lost sometimes… because they are freshman. He added that they need to be told what to do by the veteran players.

Williams is a veteran -/ and very very good with that . I miss him. Penny said he didn’t know the situation with W’s back and would find out today maybe

Switching is bad, and some of the 3's were wide open.
But not all.
Crazy that they shot that % as a bad shooting team - open or not.
Maybe we finally got soft rims at FEF?

Two different statements...But you knew this.

Penny saw yesterday that he could play small...

Playing small is even better with Williams and Minott in the game....

See how that works.

I did notice a few bounces that went in on both ends...

Seems like that never used to happen...I assumed they used the Grizzlies goals though.

Duren can "generally" guard on switches out top. A lot of the 3's yesterday came from guys thinking he needed help and losing track of the man they were guarding.

This team has the length and athleticism to help on drives and recover to three point shooters, but they have to be on point with their rotations. They often over help but even more so they lose sight of their man. This is something that gets fixed with time and repetition.

RE: TIGERS -7.5 vs Cincinnati
Penny is in love with the idea of "positionless" basketball--and from a theoretical perspective it sounds cool. That idea permeates his offensive gameplan with differing results and also affects his defense.

It seems this year, he's less likely to "stick" his best defender on a player. Les should have been stuck to #24 from Cinci and also back in the OM game been stuck on Joiner. Les is far and away the best wing defender on the team and proved it time and time again last year. This year, Penny's been happy to always switch every pick which would often put less capable defenders on better shooting opponents.

I also, for the life of me, with all the length this team has why Memphis doesn't have a 1-3-1 package they can show here and there. Being able to put a Nolley/Minott/Williams up top and have athletic wings out there, while hiding a defensive liability like Tyler down low would be a great set to show.

I dont get it either. Hardaway used the 1-3-1 in high school. Not sure why it isnt a common defense we use.

I’ve always been a fan of the 1-3-1 trap

I wish we'd get back to stepping out to stop the opponent's momentum (who has the ball) when screened. We aren't doing that very often & that allows the opponent offense to flow, which makes it effective.

Yep teams are getting into the lane with a live dribble far too often.

We are long, but we aren't overly athletic. The only three that I consider to be athletic are Duren, Bates and Minott. ET possibly can be called athletic, but his horrible outside shooting negates a lot of it. LQ, Nolley and Jayden are not athletic at all.

If ET's shoulder isn't hurting him, and this is how he shoots, he needs to build a jump shot the same way that Antonio Burks and Jeremy Hunt did. Barely get off the ground, and a nice short stroke with very few moving parts.

On offense it's fine. On defense, a good coach will often be able to iso a big on one of our guards down low.

We are playing too far out on defense. It makes us easier to beat off of the dribble, and easier to screen. It also doesn't give the screened player enough time to go over the screen. Instead we have to curl under it, which leaves the shooter open, or facing a big.

WoW! I just watched this game again . ...It was most enjoyable, since the ending was already known.

Everyone did a lot of big and little things and NO ONE got skeert. Bates was on the floor fighting for the ball. He has an amazin grace to his athletic moves.

Lester is just plain out tough--he finishes through hard contact. It was glorious to see him come alive again.

Tyler killed it when he was following the guy with the ball that last play...lol He was right there, knowing he would get a chance to steal it.

Duren, Nolley, Minott, Jayden Dandridge

If you haven't watched this like a fan enjoying his/her team..you just haven't lived. lol
