Just make sure you lose to VT. That winning streak is getting too long.

Looks like your head coach might be fired tomorrow. Unless there’s abusive behavior or some form of corruption, I think it’s always a bad idea to fire mid-season.

Jody Demling that runs Louisville’s 247 board just said he doesn’t believe Chris Mack will coach another game at Louisville.

the only caveat to firing so soon is maybe we pull a LSU and get a BKelly type of coach

Maybe pay Jay Wright $20 mil a year to come to Louisville.

At least Doh had head coaching experience when he was hired.
You just don't turn over the keys to a Ferrari to a kid that has never driven before.

I'll give HD one more year at best.

BTW, Doherty left all the players for Roy's first NCAA Championship. Hubert's first class is very lackluster. You have to be able to recruit to compete.

You said this was the worst team in 50 years which is simply not true. This team would beat 2001 by 50.

Also, please remind me of Dean Smith’s first head coaching job. 07-coffee3

I don't believe we were coming off of a point shaving scandal and in need of a squeaky clean unknown when Hubert was hired.07-coffee3

Just came out this morning that Mack approached Louisville about this being his last season. I guess he saw the handwriting on the wall. Mack is probably thinking a resignation looks better on his resume then being fired.

It’s a sad situation for everyone. Coach’s wife is as close as you can get to being a woman’s basketball legend here. She’s a former Kentucky Miss Basketball after leading her school to two state championships.

I really feel sorry for the family about how this is unexpectedly ending. This was supposed to be the last job for Coach Mack and he planned to retire here. Nothing is guaranteed.

RE: Open Thread - Men's Basketball - January
I call BS on Will Wade. Too much NCAA baggage. The fans want Bruce Pearl, like Wade however, I think he has too much NCAA trouble to be hired as basketball coach at Louisville.

A name that’s getting a lot of mention around town is Baylor’s Scott Drew.

I still believe the job in the end will be Kenny Payne. He wanted it when UofL hired Mack but he was an assistant at UK at that time. A basketball coach could be the second coming of John Wooden and want the job but if he coached at UK, UofL wouldn’t hire him. Being a Louisville alum Payne knew he had to leave UK before he would ever get a shot in Louisville.

I would have to think Kenny is the favorite. He’s an alum and the truth is a black head basketball coach would help heal some of the wounds from the Breonna Taylor situation in Louisville.

This is an important hire for Louisville basketball if you disregard two interim coaches, David Padgett (Pitino’s who took over when Rick was fired in October 2017) and Howard Stacy (who took over mid season when Peck Hickman became in 1971), since 1944 Louisville has only had 4 head basketball coaches.

Edit: I took a quick look. Since 1944 Syracuse has had 5 ( 6 but one was interim.) Kansas has had 6.
Kentucky and North Carolina have had 7 while Indiana has had 11.

Amazingly Syracuse has only had 8 head coaches in 122 years!

I feel the same way. By all accounts, Mack is a great guy, and the family could have been set here forever.

But for whatever reason, it just didn't work here. Lotsa external issues that were not the fault of Mack. And he did have U of L poised for a #2 seed in the big dance that covid canceled. Had that tournament occurred, who knows how things would have turned out.

There are no guarantees in coaching. But Mack is financially set for life, whether or not he coaches another game -- which I am certain he will somewhere.

As for Louisville ... I wonder who becomes the next head coach, and when ....

Kenny Payne?
Bruce Pearl?
Eric Musselman?
Nate Oats?
Chris Holtman?

Should be interesting.

I respect the fact Coach Mack has not whined one time since taking our coaching job about the shape the program was in when he took over and how pending NCAA actions have crippled recruiting.

Maybe GT should play Clayton State before every single ACC game.
