Despite that, I felt like they did well against one of the top teams in the CAA.
Absolutely hurts our postseason chances, but shouldn't be a "bad loss".
Still a lot of time left and I definitely expect this team to get much better.
I don't see this team as being young given the level of experience in the rotation:
Falden - 5th year
Molson - 5th year
Morse - 4th year
Hodge - 4th year
Sule - 4th year
Wooden - 3rd year
Amadi, Strickland, Edwards, Ihenacho - 2nd year
Savage, Stinson and McConnell - 1st year and expected to be redshirted
They haven't played together that long is what I think you might mean. Credit Hofstra's Speedy Claxton who seems to have done an outstanding job in his first year there as HC, although he was an assistant for many years. They have an established style that works well for their players and the all the pieces seem to fit.
JMU is largely a scrappy, defensive team that likes to play with pace and energy and is still finding its way offensively (although they shot well yesterday until the last three minutes or so). JMU could not stop shots at the basket yesterday and its lack of size continues to show up. I thought both teams look tired at the end of yesterday's game. Losing Ihenacho for any extended stretch is going to hurt, as he seems to do a nice job in running the team.
JMU has a solid record this year, but they seem to be overmatched in the talent department when they lose (see Florida tournament as an example). The fact that there's no CAA tournament at the end of the rainbow to compete for an NCAA berth is putting a lot of undue pressure perhaps on the results, at least from the fans' perspective. Given the team's analytical rating, an NIT or NCAA berth isn't in the cards this year, most likely. That was part of the price of transitioning to FBS football, of course.
As an aside on Hofstra, how did they lose to a terrible W&M team after nearly beating Houston on the road and beating Arkansas?
