RE: Birmingham Stallions Coach Chizik
I mean, don’t we need to assume the whole league is screwed anyway?
The best way I heard the league described was in response to someone saying it was going to work where other leagues have failed it was going to be a success because the business partners have guaranteed to cover the first three years of expenses.
It was something like:
Lets say you want to open a restaurant. Now most restaurants fail even in good times, and restaurants are failing faster than they can open now because of covid, but you have found an investor who is willing to guarantee operating costs of your restaurant concept for three years to give it time to find a following. In fact, your angel investor wants you to think big. eight franchises right out of the gate. He's covering the costs, so great! In fact, lets put these eight franchises in big cities. Houston, Philly, New Orleans, New York. You cant believe your luck! They are also putting one in Birmingham, smaller market but its a hotbed for restaurants, Dont Sleep on Birmingham!!!
So you are pumped. Its really happening! Then just a few months before opening, your investor comes to you and says. Well about those costs... I mean, I know I agreed to cover the costs, and I know we agreed on 8 locations, but we are going to put all eight of them in one market, the smallest and cheapest of the 8 we promised. And all eight restaurants are going to be housed within blocks of each other. Oh, and they are going to have to share one kitchen...
But just for the first year. We think. And we are sure all of those people in Philly, Houston and all of those other big cities are going to fall in love with their franchises of the restaurant, even though they arent actually going to get a chance to eat there, but they can watch the food on TV! I mean its not like any of those places have another restaurant they already like and can go to whenever they want already... Right?
I'm sure its going to be a huge success!!!

More of a bar than a restaurant. And the current USFL is going to be a made for TV bar, much like Cheers. I’ll be happy if it makes it into month 2, absolutely floored if it makes it to the end of the season.

Give me something to be positive about.
None of the other teams in this league are going to play a home game for a couple of years, minimum. Tell me, if all the games were being played in L.A., how attached to "your" Birmingham team would you be? This is doubly true if we're talking about the USFL franchise of a city like Houston, which has multiple major league franchises actually playing games in Houston.
I mean, yeah, I'd run right out and buy season tickets for the new Houston Gamblers. No, wait...
They'd better put a damn good product on the field, playing very entertaining ball, because this is one helluva long shot of a business model for a sports league.

The criticism about USFL might be negative, but it's realistic. I mean, what they're trying to do hasn't worked in over a half century. You could fill a freaking encyclopedia with failed football leagues, so banking on this one sh!tting the bed as well isn't really being Debbie Downer.
And I don't know if you've looked out the window or turned on the TV lately- but there's a lot to be negative about. I mean, the world sucks pretty hard right now.

Gene Chizik: "Thanks for giving me my old job back Mack. I was rumored to be coaching a semi pro football team in Birmingham "
Mack Brown: "No problem"
