RE: Dan Bartholomae Introductory Press Conference
I watched the press conference today. The audio sucked so I couldn't hear a couple questions. I hope an Mlive reporter was there and asking questions. The Q&A portion seemed really short. Unsurprising but just worth mentioning.

Hockey?

Just watched, he's well spoken, said all the right things.

"I'm a competitor, comprehensive excellence also means winning championships and competing at the highest level." Look no further than Hockey & NCHC! It is the only "high profile program" at WMU with a legitimate chance to win a National Championship. WMU will never win a National Championship in football or basketball.

And his SWOT analysis? Maybe he should teach Proudfoot a thing or two. COGS

Define "legitimate chance to win a National Championship."

And when have we even come close to a NC in Hockey? Have we ever even won an NCAA tournament game?

This was before my time at WMU, but i feel like this happening in the Athletic realm is vastly different to the educational realm.

How so?

WMU is a fantastic educational university and doesn't have many barriers toward continuing to be one of the best except funding and enrollment. Athletics we're in a niche where the only sports we can reasonably be one of the big boys in are hockey and non-revenue. Big football/basketball schools will always be aspirations for some in our athletic department based on exposure and budgets alone.

Depending on which poll you look at, WMU is ranked 3rd or 4th best team in the country right now. Do you not think the 3rd or 4th best team in the country has a legitimate shot at a championship? Bball we are lucky to get in the top 100 every decade or so. Football we've been ranked in the top 25 once in our 100 year history.

Maybe soccer or tennis have an outside shot at a title someday, but hockey is our best chance.

We have won more NCAA tourney games in basketball than hockey and the same number of conference tournaments.

Not saying we're going to win NC in basketball, just that winning one in hockey is just as big a pipe dream as well.

Not even remotely close. When is the last time WMU basketball was top 5 in the country? Basketball and hockey tournaments are completely different. And hockey has changed at WMU. Laughable statement

Come on, Hoople, you're better than that. We are a member of the most elite conference in college hockey. Saying winning a national championship with our No. 3 nationally ranked hockey program is as much of a pipe dream as our bottom of the barrel MAC basketball program is just ludicrous. We are one of the favorites to win the Natty in hockey THIS YEAR, and currently have the odds-on favorite to win the Hobey Baker award.

The 1975-76 Basketball team FINISHED #10 in the country. We'll see where Hockey winds up this season.

Anyone who thinks WMU has the same chance for National championship in basketball as we have in hockey is either drunk, high, or mentally challenged. Basketball is zero percent and hockey is greater than zero.

I know we can't win a NC in Basketball. Or anybody in the MAC (and the Ivy League, and several other conferences).

I just think people who believe we can win one in Hockey are dreaming.

Now if you want us to drop Football and put all that money into Hockey...

WMU currently 8th best betting odds in the country for the national championship. They're 4-2 against the teams ahead of them including a road win at the betting favorite, so good case to be made that they're undervalued. Not seeing why it's such a pipe dream.

I hope we have a chance to compete for a NC on the ice.

History however says otherwise.

Ferris and Niagara tied for the worst odds. Incredible.

Times have changed a lot in the last 20 years of WMU hockey. KB invested in three successful head coaches and the Broncos were forced to leave the CCHA and join the best conference in the country. They play among the best teams in the nation. While they have traditionally struggled to make the tournament, they are ranked in the Top 5 and have their best chance in years to end their tournament skid.

Fair enough.

Hope we do.
