4 year public schools without any intercollegiate athletics
We often hear how athletics are the front porch of the institution. I was wondering how many 4 year public schools do not have any intercollegiate athletics at all. Obviously those schools that focus on graduate medical degrees or law degrees would not be in this list. Colleges that are totally online do not count either.

I can think of five:
Athens State University - school in Alabama that focus on upper division and grad classes.
Cal State - Channel Islands - Relatively new school in what used to be the "Hotel California" of Eagles fame
University of Alaska Southeast - small college in Ketchikan, dropped all sports in 1990.
New Mexico Tech - very small school with a really good engineering program.
Northeastern Illinois University - has sports at the DI level, but dropped all sports in 1998.

Metro State in Minneapolis is another.
University of Baltimore as well.
CU Denver.

I suspect most of them are going to be either mostly adult focused or highly specialized.

Also, numerous tribal colleges offer Bachelors degrees and are public colleges, but I'm not sure if that is what you had in mind.

One that comes to mind is Sinte Gleska University.

University of Baltimore is much more like Athens St, focused on upperdivision and grad classes. I was not really wondering about tribal colleges, but that is a good point. They really do not fit the question that I was thinking about.

What’s the graduation rate like at UC-CI? Can you check out any time you like, but you can never graduate?

Southern (New Orleans) dropped athletics (NAIA, Gulf Coast Athletic) a few years ago. Had MBB, WBB, VB, XC and T&F programs. Their T&F program was pretty solid and now the HC is at Xavier across town

Was that COVID related?

Baltimore was a Division I program until 1980.

Two more former I-AA schools without sports: Northeastern Illinois and Morris Brown, an HBCU that has been close to defunct for a decade or more.

Channel Islands is locally known as CSUCI (C-Sucky). It is not a UC it is a Cal State school. Previously it was a Psych facility. Hotel California is about drugs, not mental health, so no, CSUCI is not Hotel California. Its actually a pretty campus. Mission revival architecture, and a short drive from the beach. I've been to some car shows there.

They actually started the process to start athletics around 2008, but the recession scuttled those plans. I believe the committee still exists but is dormant. CSUCI wants to be a residential campus so athletics makes a lot of sense, they are just waiting for the right environment. I haven't talked to anyone on the committee for a few years though. Their mascot are the Dolphins.

I already knew about Northeastern Illinois, I forgot about Morris Brown, but that is private. I was looking specifically at public schools.

I thought the campus was the old Psych Hospital that the Eagles based their song on. My mistake. It is a pretty campus.

With all the talk on this board about the unnecessary costs of college athletics, are these schools rolling in the $$$? Are they getting hundreds of thousands of applications each year?

The University of Alaska Southeast is mostly considered the "online" branch of the University of Alaska, used by students who want to take classes online. There are a few physical campuses of UAS, the main campus being in Juneau.

I guess that is where I sort of wanted to take this. For those who have either dropped all athletics, or never had them to begin with, what is their current and historical situation? Did athletics help or did they not have any bearing at all? Just a few questions to pose, but I was trying to gather the schools to even look at.

Here are the public schools that have been mentioned already -

Athens State University - school in Alabama that focus on upper division and grad classes.
Cal State - Channel Islands - Tried to add sports, but recession of 2008 stopped them
University of Alaska Southeast - small college in Ketchikan, dropped all sports in 1990.
New Mexico Tech - very small school with a really good engineering program.
Northeastern Illinois University - has sports at the DI level, but dropped all sports in 1998.
University of Baltimore - dropped sports in 1980, similar to Athens State in upperdivision and grad focus.
Metro State in Minneapolis
University of Baltimore
CU Denver

Yes, it is the old Camarillo State Psych Hospital. But the Eagles didn't base their song on that. The thing that you can check in on but never leave is addiction.

I find it kinda funny that schools without athletics still have mascots and logos, but I guess they're good for branding/merch

CSUCI has club sports:

So the mascot has a purpose.

I wasn't even aware Northeastern Illinois had dropped out of Division I. I remember them being in the Horizon or one of those midwestern leagues.

I think Thomas Edison State University over in Trenton, NJ doesn’t field athletics like the other NJ state schools. They target non-traditional’s, continuing education sorts, and graduate studies. Ironically, even without sports, I’ve heard over the years they have in’s with some of the region’s pro sports teams to get guys who didn’t graduate through the process.
