Is there any more news on this story? It looks like Chris Nichter is still listed as the Director of the Bearcat Bands, but I haven't heard anything about his reinstatement.
Not "Marching Band" related, but I was struck by how...crappy...the Shocker Pep band sounded as I watched the BB game yesterday. As a High School "Band Geek," the bands are a key part of what I love about Collegiate athletics. Without the bands, you have a "pro game" experience...both in Football and Basketball. So, I'm really quite interested to know what the heck is happening with the bands and hoping that Dr. Nichter is given the opportunity to make the bands the best possible.
(And yeah, I think the band has come a long way in the right direction since Dr. Frenz's retirement.)
You mean "Dr. Terren L. Frenz" our retired acolyte of John Phillips Sousa?

RE: Band Mystery? Bad Timing!
I thought Dr. Terren L. Frenz did a very nice job considering the lack of funding, lack of a major for aspiring band directors and even lack of interest from both the university and the athletic department for many years. It was amazing to me how much of the operation of the band was funded by the members of the band itself, down to the fitting and repairing of the uniforms and of members providing their own instruments.
But yes, it was time for him to retire. The school needs to do better by the band, and then the band needs to do better in return.

In an academic setting calling oneself Doctor seems acceptable. Outside of academia other than a medical Doctor calling oneself DR. seems pompous.

Depends on the setting.
Regardless of MD or not, if you earned that doctorate,, you earned the title.

No one in academia asks to be called doctor... unless they're a medical doctor, or are from a discipline that's not respected by other academics.

RE: Band Mystery? Bad Timing!
Dr. is simply an abbreviation for doctorate. Obviously everyone is familiar with Medical Doctors but for the most part people in academia and industry respect doctorates of philosophy under he same title. Doctorates in other fields like a Doctorate of Dental Surgery, Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, etc. are doctorates all the same. In my experience the only people who seem to worry too much about that title are usually insecure about their own credentials.

Had a guy that I worked with in IT that demanded that everyone call him DR. Never called him by that.

When I was first coming up, I used to work with an older lady whose husband was an ordained minister with a Doctor of Theology. In all the years I worked with her I never heard her use his first name, she would refer to him as Dr. or Reverend Smith. She had sort of a southern, dignified manner about her; I wonder if she addressed him as that at home.

RE: Band Mystery? Bad Timing!
WCPO posted a story about why the band directors were suspended. Doesn't really say what specifically they did, but apparently were "discourteous" to the band members and made them feel "publicly humiliated" and the band members were uncomfortable meeting with the directors alone.

Haha what? Good thing they don’t play football and mess up in front of Saban.
I can’t comment to the personal meetings though.

God, my High School marching band Director and the guy who choreographed the shows would never make it today... They were brutal when they needed to be.

Top band directors reinstated after paid leave
An investigation found Director Christopher Nichter and Assoc. Director Nicholas Angelis violated university policy by being 'discourteous' toward students.

CINCINNATI — A University of Cincinnati internal investigation found students in UC Bearcat Bands 'felt publicly humiliated' by the top two directors during practice and rehearsals, and 'did not feel comfortable meeting in offices alone with the directors.'
The investigation found Director Christopher Nichter and Assoc. Director Nicholas Angelis violated university policy by being 'discourteous' toward students, according to letters that UC Asst. Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Juan Guardia wrote to the two directors in February.
UC placed Nichter and Angelis on paid leave on Dec. 17.
Recent Stories from wcpo.com
They were not allowed to participate with the band when students performed two weeks later at the Cotton Bowl where UC lost to Alabama in the College Football Playoff.
There were 'areas of concern presented as recurring themes' by students, Guardia wrote in the letters to Nichter and Angelis.
"Students have witnessed their peers being brought to tears and are reluctant to bring concerns directly to directors," Guardia wrote.
According to Guardia's letters, Nichter and Angelis received 'verbal counseling.'
Both men are required to complete the lessons Fighting Gender Bias at Work and Compassionate Leadership.
I guess they used a wrong snowflake pronoun.
