The Mankato School District in Minnesota enacted the policy earlier this month, permitting minority teachers to segregate themselves from their white colleagues.
The policy was put forward to put teachers of color and American Indian teachers together in a school to "...reduce isolation and increase opportunity for collegial support.”
Before the policy was voted on, several Board members openly supported the new policy while simultaneously stating this was NOT segregation. One board member stated "“It’s about showing them they aren’t alone, and unless you’ve been in those shoes and have experienced that, I think we need to trust our staff [when] they’re saying that they’re not feeling supported.”
So, unless I'm misreading the policy intent, some schools in this district will be primarily composed of non-white and Indian teachers drawing higher pay (stipend) based on their skin color/tone. Meanwhile other schools will be primarily composed of white teachers NOT eligible for this stipend because they are NOT the preferred/chosen skin color/tone.
So....Senator Pocahontas would draw this stipend if she was a teacher.
This seems totally fair, LOL. It just LOOKS like segregation but what do I know?
