...Army AND Air Force to join AAC to make 16?
...there's a thread over on the 'national' College Sports and Conference Realignment spot which addresses this - a YouTube interview with the Navy AD (which is hard to listen to, as the Navy band plays directly behind them the whole time) seems to indicate that Army and AF may be added to get all the service academies in one conference - the AAC seems apropos... I'd be for it - what say y'all?

here's the link:

Army, Air Force to AAC?

In a heart beat. I’d love it but I’ll believe it after it happens.

I’m all for it, but I’m with Attalla on the skepticism. Seems like When this stuff was just starting I read something in The Athletic that gave Navy a free opt out if they added another academy

The Military Academies are the elite of College Sports in my opinion it are at a distinct disadvantage with the NIL and the Transfer Portal. The style of play is challenging to prepare for because you don’t see it often. If you saw the teams more often that would take some of that advantage away. It maybe possible in a Portal format but only for a limited time. Comments from the Army side have stated when they were members of C-USA that was a disaster. Air Force has been mentioned as interested in the AAC with Colorado State but that was speculation. Navy plays in the Western Division but is located on the East Coast. Would all the academics be in the same division. Doubtful but I could see Air Force joint the AAC but I can’t see Army joining

Simple answer, not gonna happen.

1. Would AF & Army get 7 mil per team like the legacy AAC teams? AF is not gonna be fine with getting 2 mil compared to the nearly 5 mil they are currently getting.

2. Would Navy be okay with this? On the surface it would for those on the outside looking in to say yes. But I don't think Navy would approve it.

3. Could they figure out the Army/Navy game?

Not sayin' it couldn't happen but I don't see it happening.

RE: ...Army AND Air Force to join AAC to make 16?
If the academies can get more money out of the TV deals, and I think they easily could, there's several advantages that the AAC would and should jump on and advantages for the service academies.

1. Putting the mini-conference that the service academies are into one conference frees up 1 game slots per year for Navy and 2 for AF. Those games can be cupcakes in the Power 5 or another big money game.

2. Army could get access to better bowls.

3. Even if the AAC has to carve out extra money for the Academies, just breaking even could still get the AAC more exposure (although I think there is more money there).

4. The Army Navy game doesn't have to be a conference game, unless it becomes one. Army can play in the opposite division from Navy and AF. Air Force and Army can be a permanent division rival. Navy and Army can just not meet during the regular season and they rotate to a different cross division opponent. In the unlikely scenario where Army and Navy wins their divisions, the AAC championship becomes a "Classic" between 2 other non service teams, and the Army Navy game becomes the AAC championship game.

Army was not successful in CUSA because of terrible coaching IMHO.

Army could have already joined the AAC for better bowl access so I don't think that would be a driving force for them to join. I would like to know why AF and Colo St didn't join the AAC? But I don't think they would be interested in joining the new configuration of the AAC unless the MWC collapses.

...may just be waiting for Boise State to make a play - general indications are, if and when the BIG XII does another round of expansion, BSU is at the top of the list... perhaps SDSU as well... at that point the MWC might implode and we could have 2-4 of those teams in the AAC (assuming the BIG XII grabs a few more AACs, such as Memphis, SMU, or... ? 05-stirthepot )

Army would be football only. Not sure about USAF IF it happened.

The Service Academies are literally America's Teams, and I'd love to catch a game at any of them. Just be prepared for the chop blocks that come along with them.

Well how long they wait for that? I'm pretty sure Boise and SDSU turned down an AAC invite for the 75th time was due to a possible BIG XII invite. Unless AF decides to go it alone I think the remaining academies joining the AAC ship has sailed.

Being my local team (fark the Terps), I love going to games at the Naval Academy. It's quite a spectacle. The Corps of Midshipmen marches onto the field prior to the game and every game has a jet flyover.

I don’t see it happening anytime soon. Maybe after more movement but I figure things will settle in here for 4-5 years at least.

Having the service academies in conference with us would be spectacular. A cool different vibe in games vs them. Personally I'd love this. Much respect for the service members.

That said, I'd still want us to beat them every time we play.
