First one heading out is in the portal.

Kyle adams.

Not surprising. I’m sure there will be more coming.

Hmmm. Cig definitely has to get more than one transfer QB now. Need some healthy competition in the QB room on an FBS roster.

I will need to pay attention to how many QB’s most FBS teams carry. What is a good target number for scholarship QB’s ? 4? It is too important to go light at that position.

It is going to happen. It is the nature of the game today. I usually do not have a problem with a player wishing to go elsewhere to get more playing time, these guys all want to play. Sometimes it doesn't work out to their advantage though. Thinking of Gage Maloney here. Sometimes the grass isn't any greener over the septic tank. Just hope we do not lose any of our returning starters to "better" programs.

I definitely think there will be a number of players who will be entering the portal because they will be flat-out recruited over due to us moving up. I wouldn't fault anyone in that situation for looking to leave.

I'm hoping that Cig makes Jeff Undercuffler a full scholly offer immediately. This guy has two or three years of eligibility left and is an exceptional (All-American) passer. He has a great long ball and tremendous vision to find open receivers. I sent him a tweet urging him to choose Belt-bound JMU, and I hope he brings #86 with him....

Cole’s brother was an offensive lineman with Albany, so I wonder what sort of conversations, if any, he’s had about replacing his brother.

I tweeted Jeff, urging him to come to JMU. I am urging other JMU fans to do the same. Knowing how much he is wanted could be the factor that makes him a Duke.

Undercuffler's entry into the transfer portal is fortuitous, to say the least. We REALLY need him! He is Sun Belt-ready and, as incredible as Cole has been all year, a step up at the quarterback position. He has been playing behind a not-so-great offensive line at Albany with 21 sacks this year, and you can see in his highlight video what little time he has to find an open receiver, which he does well. He has a cannon for an arm but can pass with a soft touch when needed, especially dropping the ball into the corner of the endzone right over his receivers' shoulder and into their waiting hands. Awesome touch!

As he did with Cole, Cig will build the offense around Jeff, according to his strengths. The misery that he, our young, but now veteran offensive line, plus Wells and Thornton can bring to opposing defenses would be a delight to watch! I just hope he doesn't get snatched up by a P5, even though I can't imagine one where he will get greater opportunity or exposure than he will on the best team in the most powerful division of the strongest conference in G5.

Go, Dukes!

Not sure how JMU's football staff and the Athletic Department in general views fans and boosters tweeting recruits.
Arizona State, for example, has sent this out to their fanbase: "Reminder to boosters: Tweeting recruits is an NCAA violation. Please leave the recruiting to our coaches"

Might be worth looking into...

Not reading into anything too much but Jeff Undercuffler liked the Cignetti tweet saying “who is next?”

Jeff has some honors prior to the season and then got hurt I believe. He is young and has great height and size for a qb. For those who have watched some film on different qb’s that we’re interested in, where does he rank?

Spot on. Members of the Duke Club need to refrain from any contact with potential recruits, unless you’re an immediate member of the recruits family.

Them’s the rules, like ‘em or not. Respect the rules. Boosters must avoid contacts (innocent or not) to avoid violations that will potentially lead to sanctions, such as a ruling that a Booster contacted player is ruled ineligible for recruiting by the Booster’s school.

Indeed. I had never heard that. However AZSU used the term "booster." Wouldn't that be different than Joe Fan tweeting? And, frankly, if that is an NCAA violation, I'm pretty sure that rule would be a violation of the First Amendment, not that I would ever expect it to get to that level.

Any member of the Duke Club is by definition a “booster.” Season ticket holders might also qualify as a “booster”…but its a hard “yes” for any member of the Duke Club.

Speculation and message board talk is fine, but it crosses the line where actual contact is involved.

RE: Portal/transfers
Wonder if BarStool Sports tweeted at 5 star recruit Travis Hunter before their their money (alleged $1.5mil NIL) and ties to Deion Sanders landed him at Jackson State? And if so, where this ‘violation’ falls on their priority list next to Travis’ recruiting concerns that has had everyone discussing. Many recruits tweet out their offers and interests and many “boosters” respond with comments, including many of us here. If any of you have ever tweeted at an athlete not yet signed with JMU I guess you are guilty as well. That said I highly doubt the NCAA has such a tweet at the top of their list of things to investigate.

PS: judging by the replies to his own tweet announcing his going into the portal we have Auburn, Akron, Florida A&M, and Montana on the hotlist to go with the more than 1 JMU booster reaching out.

Haha, probably not. But still a good opportunity to remind everyone to practice good habits when interacting on social media given the new world we're entering.

RE: Portal/transfers
I was looking for instances of the NCAA punishing a school that had a fan tweet a prospect and could find nothing, so as far as I can tell, the NCAA has never tried to enforce this authoritarian "rule." And, since they have never enforced it before, as though they could, if they decided to enforce it now, it would be "selective enforcement" since non-enforcement is now the long-standing precedent.

However, I did find an article where OU coach Bob Stoops encouraged fans on social media to urge 5-star RB recruit Joe Mixon to come to Oklahoma. 172 fans tweeted Mixon, urging him to become a Sooner. No one was punished and Joe Mixon chose Oklahoma. He is now with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Academic circumstances permitting (no Gunnar Holmberg issues), I believe that Jeff Undercuffler is going to be in a Dukes uniform soon, which will be beyond awesome!

Go, Dukes!

If we don't have an FBS Offensive Line next year, we lose a lot. I think we can all agree that this year, the O Line was not big/strong enough to lay FBS defenses every week.

Am I wrong coaches out there?

I believe our young O-line did a fantastic job last season, and they are plenty big and strong enough to play FBS defenses every week. We have several true freshmen who are now seasoned vets, which is going to pay huge dividends in the coming years. Remember, they practice against an FBS-level defense every day.

RE: Portal/transfers
As some posters are recent first time donors, I'm not shocked there is a misunderstanding of "boosters" and "recruiting." As a Duke Club member (aka booster), you cannot recruit a potential student athlete (aka cannot communicate with at all, no tweet replies, no DMs, basically no change in relationship with the student athlete before or after they become a "recruit"). A fan is not necessarily a booster as just cheering for a team doesn't meet the threshold, but anyone that made an investment (in time or in money) is a booster.

I'm ~95% sure that JMU sent out an email ~5 years ago clarifying the situation. It is also on the JMU Sports website.

Now in practice - There are 37 million US based daily twitter users accounting for 500 million tweets a day. In the meantime, coaches are making handshake deals with Nike and pro agents; students are taking fake classes / getting fake grades, parents are getting cushy jobs; kids are getting bags of cash and cushy summer jobs; recruiting trips are including strippers; and at least holy roller is calling an escort hotline. So with all the more severe violations that the NCAA is trying to run down, some Joe Schmoe tweeting some unranked recruit is probably at the bottom of the priority list.
