R1 has lost it's meaning. It used to be almost 1 to 1 with AAU membership. Now that splits is like P5 (AAU) and G5 (R1).

Well that should help with changing perceptions of the university's academic status! Wonder if this helps boost their case to the Big XII to ponder a second look before the next round of realignment...

Huh, I didn't know NDSU made it back to R1. The university worked hard to achieve that level about a decade back. But just after reaching that level, they changed the criteria which knocked NDSU back down to R2. Nice to see us back at R1.

UTEP made it on there a few years back.

I see that Baylor and UTSA got added this year too.

I also see that Brandeis University went in the opposite direction - going from R1 status to R2 status. This is noteworthy because Brandeis is still a member of the AAU. So this would be the first time in memory that a member of the AAU is also not in the list of R1 institutions.

I'm not sure it would matter that much to the Big 12 which is the only P5 expansion possibility for the Tigers. I doubt not being R1 is what held them back this round.

This was also an issue with Catholic University, an early AAU member who withdrew over a lack of research as an R2.
