Living 13 hours away I sympathize with LairDweller. I don't know how to evaluate them, especially with no speed numbers, but I like the size of the linemen and linebackers. I see a lot of them are low level P5 recruits which is an improvement

I think our coaching staff has done well at identifying and discovering diamonds in the rough who may have gone unnoticed by other schools. But one of the ways I tend to evaluate the recruits on the front end is who else is recruiting them.

When our competition for a recruit is Nichols State, North Alabama, Tennessee Tech, Austin Peay, Mississippi Valley, etc., that's not a good sign. I realize we are not going to go head to head with the bigger P-5 schools that often, but I would sure like to see us snagging some recruits who are recruited by SEC, ACC and Big 12 schools--or even high-end G-5 schools (which is what our level of competition is about to be).

This is the best class of the return. Don’t care what the stars say — go watch the tape. There are some nasty dawgs in there. Our staff has proven they know how to evaluate and develop this type of player.

Also, to your point bftb most of these signees were being recruited heavily by peers, rivals and some of the top g5s. It is also important to note that the portal has dramatically affected juco recruiting.

Gill is a flat out dog. He is a Jordan smith, Alex Wright type. Riece is probably the lowest rated recruit but he is exactly the kind of tweener our staff has turned into stars on defense. He fits that star LB position very well. He is fast and hits with impact.

I don’t care if Perryman’s other offers were division 2 schools in the middle of nowhere — go watch the tape. Considering our last 3 running backs were Jordan Howard, Spencer Brown and Dewayne McBride I will get our staff the benefit of the doubt that they can spot a stud RB others miss.

Perryman looks like someone chiseled him out of solid rock. He hits the hole in a hurry and that’s where the fun begins. His film is 10 minutes of defenders littering the field looking out their ear holes

Zeno highlights are pretty good. QB competition will be interesting this spring. I may have to attend the spring game just to catch a glimpse.

Been watching lot of tape tonight. Don’t care what the stars say, we got some flat out nasty dogs comin’ in on D. They will fit right in.

If we can keep McBride healthy and have a dominate defense along with Shropshire downfield plays we may have something special brewing for the next few years.

Thats what I saw as well. Hard runner so is the hs guy. The fit our style.

After gritting my teeth all through last season, I am ready to welcome all these new offensive players to the Southside. When it comes to our QB play and backup running backs, it seems to me we've got nowhere to go but up. Exciting stuff!

Addressing of needs, quality of player, fit for those player’s skills into UAB’s system. An example is the LB who is the Moll clone — others may see an undersized tweener, our staff sees Moll and Ganus in what they like to do on defense. Also, some of these juco guys, if you look at their high school history, were pretty highly recruited and ended up in juco for one reason or another. Gill for example signed with UCF at their peak and had a lot of p5 offers. There is a track record at UAB of those player profiles being very successful.


True quality won’t be known for 2-3 more years but I think it is a very strong class in an important transition year.

Also, recruiting rankings below the top 10 are hot trash. In the G5 they are the NYC landfill of big pile of trash. Especially now with the portal. Absolute horse crap to try to rank these when difference between No. 60 and No. 90 is going to be influenced by market and two stars on two players ranked by someone who barely even looked at these players if they looked at them at all.

“It just is.” Every class we sign is labeled the new best class when the bar was never really set high.

The two safeties are probably the best quality we’ve signed there out of HS.

Regarding Juco Olinemen, besides Telfort, Yates and Trzpuc are probably the best quality we’ve signed based on offers from there.

Gill is an even signing with Edges of the past. Does he have closing speed? Our edges never really could close the gap on the better QBs

We could’ve done a lot better everywhere else. We continue to regress at DT. Are we really hitting post grad programs for DBs now? Come on, man. Should be recruiting better at LB with such a proven record of a solid D. That falls on Reeves who coaches them personally. LB market is deep. Can do better. Allen Henry was a need at DT, now he’s signed with coastal.

RB. There’s a lot of guys on the market that are much better. Hate me, but it’s the truth. More of the same. That’s good in some ways, bad in others. We know we lack speed, whether it’s turning the corner or breakaway speed.

Sivley is solid. Steal.

Zeno is probably the best QB signing we’ve had based on potential. Is he gonna be a leader? If Craddock ain’t on the staff to give Clark suggestions, we’d probably signed another FCS target from some random corner of another state.

My takeaway is that Juco is our safe space and it’s why the glass ceiling will remain intact for the time being.

I think that's a reasonable assessment. Which really brings us to the portal, which should probably be the major focus of recruitment from now on. I don't like it, but it is what it is, and we can't get left counting on questionable juco's when others are getting proven commodities from the transfer portal.

I would guess that we will lose several more to the portal after the bowl game, and I hope we sign a half dozen or so who can take their place and help us immediately. Maybe AK needs to walk over to the football building and give them a tutorial on how it's done.
