He was given a chance to walk on, they didn't have to give him that chance.

He was just going to get a degree as a track athlete no real chance to have an extra career or possibly make real money.

When someone gives you an opportunity you do not turn your back on them.

We are creating the most selfish society ever.

Making it too easy for people to walk away from commitment.

Creating a society where people value themselves and their own future is not "selfish" - it is value-based. There's no nobility in being altruistic to a possible detriment to your future.

If Austin was being paid NFL League Minimum to play at the Bowl Game, he'd probably be there. Instead, his future is not the bowl game - it is trying to get to the NFL to maximize his value and getting/staying healthy to do that is paramount.

The coaches understand this. The players understand this. There's a reasonable understanding of trading value for value and when that partnership can be opted out of for better opportunities.

Employees wouldn't stay at a job due to "commitment" if their value and worth is better elsewhere (and if they do, they're idiots). Why are we trying to apply some weird high level of commitment because it is sports? He gave the football team 4 years, he earned his spot and elevated his value and future value on hard work, and he's opting to maximize it.

Different opinions and different perspectives on it. I hope he has makes it to the NFL and God bless him on his journey on his next step. I am glad he's selfish, i.e. values himself - it helped him work towards making himself a better player.

Yep, it's all about me, me, me. F$%#% errbody, my team mates, the fans who made this possible, the game itself that gave me this opportunity, always what's best for me! Sorry to single this one out, it is happening everywhere, all the time. The world is worse for this attitude of selfishness and greed.

A player doesn't owe anyone anything. They dedicated a life to it to make sure they squeeze out every bit they can get out of it. They made their own opportunity. And it's the false mentality the "game" gave them this opportunity. To some extent, I agree that the Fans did because the opportunity doesn't exist without fans caring enough to spend money on it, but it is still trading value for value. They trade their value as a player, and you trade your money for entertainment.

But college athletes, generally, are not making NFL money. Thus, their future livelihood depends on that opportunity. They don't owe their livelihoods to you or the university.

You expect self-sacrifice - for these kids to give up a higher value for a lesser value - to make YOU happy and to make other people happy. That is selfishness.

Do people not understand that if we came out and said, "If you don't play in bowl game you are barred from facility and persona non grata" then what would happen in recruiting? Every other coach in the country would be using that against us. Rather you agree or not this is the players era (except for coaches who still make insane salaries) so its either get with it or get hit with it.

There are so many bowl games that most of them have become meaningless - even to the players.

It used to be an honor and a privilege to participate - it was special to be selected to go, now? Just be average.....

ESPN realized that even the worst bowl games are watching by more people than the higher rated basketball games. Thus, they started to create this filler.

truth

Especially true when you realize that ESPN can cram more advertising time for one event into a 3+ hour college football game vs having to schedule two basketball games for a near equivalent return. They are controlling college sports now....

You whine like a baby about trophy culture...but you want a team that is 6-6 from a mid major conference that lost a game by 71 points to be in the playoffs.

Quote:When they expand the playoffs ----then bowls become even more of a political glorified exhibition than they already are . We need far less bowls and more teams in playoffs.
Quote:No one cares about bowl games. They are a glorified exhibition game.

Now you are easily the angriest, whining like a little baby because Austin isn't playing in a supposed exhibition game. You are always good for a few laughs.

The bowls are exactly what I said they are MOLASSES ---but if the school is going to play one --then the players need to honor their commitment and show just a little integrity

Stop following me with the insults SQUIGGY--otherwise I will start returning fire and we will both go in timeout again----and you will have to send the MODS a PM again saying that you have NEVER ATTACKED or INSULTED ANYONE on this board EVER---and blame our banishment just on me again.....you just said I was angry/whining like a baby LOL LOL LOL--if this board could only see those PMs you sent to the MODS ------NOBODY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD WHINED LIKE YOU DID---I was EMBARRASSED for you

You are well on your way to your 3rd banning in a row and there is no way I will tag along this time.

Quote:you will have to send the MODS a PM again saying that you have NEVER ATTACKED or INSULTED ANYONE on this board EVER

Everyone knows I would never say anything like this. Everyone knows you are enough of a liar to say this and/or not bright enough to read properly.

Whining about a player not playing in something you call an exhibition. Hilarious. 03-lmfao01-wingedeagle

I went back and looked at the WHINING EMBARRASSING PM's you sent---I stand corrected --what you actually said was even worse --I quote -" I'm not arguing with any other posters, I've been very well behaved "-----------pitiful ....and you have continued to argue and INSULT posters since you have returned-----

You are the one on the way to your next banning --not me --all I did was express my opinion on CA skipping the bowl----you have continued to argue and insult everyone --nothing has changed with you---STOP FOLLOWING ME WITH THE INSULTS

Honor his commitment lol! None of you know what his commitments are. If he misses a class, would you complain as well for not "honoring his commitment"?
His scholarship is for his living expense, education, etc. The scholarship is not a payment to play football.

If Austin goes to Hawaii and gets carted off to never play again, those outraged wouldn't give so much as a thank you or a pat on the back.
This is a guy who worked his butt off and played as a walk-on for 2yrs before earning a football scholarship. Working scout team, getting hit knowing you won't play but yet he's selfish.

I didn't mention you in 20 posts that you weren't even participating in. I'm just one poster commenting on something you posted, like everyone else is. You call them exhibition games...AND you are whining that he isn't playing in it. As if Austin owes you of all people, anything.

You are arguing with everyone here. Enjoy the rest of your stay.

The coach and player worship on this board blows my mind

I thought we were first and foremost FANS OF THE UNIVERSITY-MEMPHIS TIGERS

I suppose it is OK for him to risk injury in the senior bowl ---but not a scheduled TIGER game---or any of the TIGER games in the past for that matter

Leach was right---so was the school last year that charged the players that opted out

You are the snowflake pitching a fit about the kid but have no problem with coaches doing it.

You see I see the player and the coach as the same...So if I aint mad at the coach for leaving I shouldn't be mad at the player.

No coach or player worship...I just don't feel I am so entitled to watch him play for Memphis that he should ignore what is best for him...

You know like some snowflakes complaining about their feelings on here.
