RE: @High Point - GAME 8
The biggest "improvement" I could see is only 10 three point attempts. I believe we've had at least 20 and up to 40 in every other game.

Look. I understand your commitment to positives after a win. However, beating High Point is not a “huge” win. It’s nice, and hopefully the momentum Carrie’s to our game against Campbell and beyond. These are good kids, and I hope they keep winning. They stuck together as a group, lifted each other up and got the win. However, it’s not being a Debbie Downer to be disappointed we blew a 14 pt lead late in the 2nd half. That’s just bad basketball and bad coaching.

Better to learn while winning than to learn while losing, I will grant you that. And I LOVE Jaylen Sims and think he's a great player. But it's not being a "Debbie Downer" to point out the obvious - he's not a point guard and the TEAM suffers when you try to make him one just because you want to play him and can't figure out the best way to do it.

Having an actual point guard running the point is not the sole answer . But if you think we can play the game we played today against Campbell and win, I know a few people who would take the other side of that bet.

Was listening to the game on the golf course with another Uncw guy, coincidentally our golf game fell apart when Uncw pissed away the lead, coincidence? These coaching decisions are baffling

RE: @High Point - GAME 8
I want to get excited about this team, but an OT win where we scored under 60 in regulation doesn't get me there.

I can point to some positives though.

1. I've mentioned my concern about lacking the ability to get a bucket in crunch time. Phillips showed he can go one on one, get to the paint and score. In a tight game we have to have that. And it looks like Siddle is pushing Phillips to be "the man".

2. Sims made the game winning shot and finished when he had to. I honestly don't remember him doing that in a game.

3. It can't be an accident that we only took 10 three pointers. That tells me Siddle made some sort of a change 5o make that happen.

The negatives are that we scored under 60 in regulation, shot horribly at the FT line and couldn't hold a lead to close this out in regulation.

Agree with this entire post. I’ll add that our defense was hounding High Point too. Trazarian White was everywhere, so was Mike Okauru. Just sticking arms in passing lanes and causing deflections that led to points. Shykeim had a few key steals too jumping lanes. Overall, the defense showed up today, and led our ability to find what limited offense we could. Most of our buckets came in transition. Which is more to 82’s point that we only scored 59, and our half court offense is just not very good. At all. Thankfully, our defense is better.

I look at basketball as a game of runs.Yes we were up 14 and lost that lead.If you call it bad coaching to lose a lead then it has to be good coaching to get a lead correct? Hats off to this staff for not letting this group quit. It was a huge win in my opinion...4-6 versus 5-5 is a big difference mentally.

Yes. It was good coaching to get a lead like that. There were positives in this game. You can read them above. However, losing a lead like that is damn near inexcusable. We were lucky they were terrible on offense and we got the win. It’s very good to get that win, but I’m not going to say this gives me a ton of hope for the season. There is a lot of work to be done.

Nope...5-5 in year 2 and the sky is falling lol. Nobody here has said anything about an undefeated conference season...But I've heard a ton of negativity on the opposite end of that spectrum.

Well. When there’s a lot of losing happening AND very questionable coaching decisions, some criticism is fair and comes with the territory. If we keep winning, that likely decreases. That’s how these things work. Welcome to a message board.

I’ll be the first to give credit when it’s due. As 08 mentioned we are 3-5. And definitely happy we escaped with a W today however we play like that against a decent team we are not leaving with a W. Gray, you all on the Sims at PG experience too?

Good win against an average team who would be bottom of the CAA.

1. GRAYHAWK is correct Tubby Smith is a legendary coach but is in the downward path of his career. But you have to respect what he has done historically.

2. I was willing to give Siddle the benefit of the doubt to see how Sims at PG goes. After 3 or 4 games it is not working. Though I feel Siddle will continue Sims starting at PG after beating HPU.

2. No way we should have blown a 14pt lead. That’s a credit to Tubby and hopefully a learning experience on coaching for Siddle.

3. We didn’t quit in OT and controlled OT thanks to Phillips and Sims winning basket.

4. HPU is an absolutely beautiful school thanks to Nido Qubein and his tremendous fundraising and business background. The new arena has a conference center and hotel apart of it and architecturally is breathtaking.

5. Trending in the right direction, but if we lay an egg against Campbell then it will be mightily concerning heading into CAA.

1. Tubby is a good coach. Legendary? No. He coached at Kentucky and is now at High Point. I like Tubby, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t agree that he’s “legendary” status.

2 (a - Bc I don’t think you meant to have two of them). I agree. Sims at PG is a catastrophe but I’m sure with this win tonight he feels vindicated in his decision, which is still clearly wrong. Especially given the fact Phillips won us that game in OT.

2 (b). Again, agree. Shouldn’t have happened, credit to HPU, and hopefully a learning point for Siddle. Not playing his PGs at PG when we were having trouble not turning the ball over and getting players into good sets and good looks was painfully obvious and darn near gave us a loss today.

3. Correct. Sims game winning bucket was huge, but I was glad he was only in the game for 26 seconds of the OT period.

4. Sounds amazing. The arena looked really good on camera too. Sounds like that school has smart people making decisions.

5. Good to get a win, but I’m not seeing us trend in the right direction because it still doesn’t look like there’s any sort of plan on offense. 17 turnovers is not trending in the right direction either. Nine times out of ten, that is a loss. Let’s be honest with ourselves. That HPU team isn’t very good, and we struggled to beat them. Fornes coming off the bench for 15 total minutes and taking more shots than all of our starters, and still not showing an ability to make them… still a giant concern.

Silver lining is that our defense helped, but HPU seemed like a small team overall and a good matchup for us. I think when it comes to CAA play we are going to be whistled for a ton of fouls, and teams will happily let us jack up shots. They’re probably going to stuff the paint and force us to shoot. So, I’m not excited for conference play.

RE: @High Point - GAME 8
I watched the second half again and focused on off the ball movement. Our only offense today (except for one possession where HPU went 3-2) was identifying a matchup we liked and trying to beat it 1 on 1. We flatten the offense and occasionally run our wing off a screen, but almost all of the movement is lethargic and meaningless. When OT started, we had better movement, but nothing is done with purpose. We're not cutting to get opening and we're not screening to get people open. Just passive movement waiting on someone to go 1 on 1.

I don't think Siddle coached poorly to lose the lead. We started the second half by creating a TO and getting a bucket in transition, then we pushed the lead to 8 on a possession where we got 3 OR. After exchanging baskets, HPU went 3-2, we found Baker on the block, he kicked it out to top of the key to Sims (?) who quickly found Harvey on for a 3 to give us a 9 point lead (best possession of the half). That led to a Smith TO and we came out of that with b2b turnovers. After HPU cut it to 4, they extended to full court pressure and that is where we extended the lead with a little fools gold. We went over the top to Baker who made 1 of 2 (+5). Next possession, we're up three and Baker comes to the top of the key to set a ball screen, but he slips the screen and Okauru hits him for an ally hoop putting us up 5 again. Next possession, Fornes secures the rebound and finds Okauru ahead for a dunk, followed by an Okauru 3 in transition. We extended the lead to 12 on the next two possessions by pretty dumb fouls by HPU and then to 14 after a steal and a Fornes layup in transition.

9:22 Tubby called a timeout down 53-39. Out of that TO, HPU missed a three and then Fornes turns the ball over, doesn't hustle back and HPU gets a put back dunk to start their come back.

In terms of the mistakes we made, we fouled on a 3 point shot that gave them a chance to cut the lead to 1. Even with that mistake, we rebounded had the ball and a 2 point lead with 17.5 seconds left, but couldn't get the ball in bounds. Then with a 2 point lead and only seconds on the clock and we have non-competitive foul on a layup that should've cost of us the game in regulation if they make their free throw.

Interestingly, when Phillips came out with 14:03 in the second we were up 4. We extended the lead to 14 with 9:22 to play and it was a 10 point game when Phillips checked back in at the 7:10 mark. At least for this game, the issue isn't who's playing PG, it's the fact that whoever we having running point didn't have an offense to coordinate. I don't have Flo, so I'm not watching every game like some of you, but if this offense is indicative of what we typically run, A/TO ratio is really meaningless.

1. Tubby strikes me as incredibly nice and he's a good coach. He's legendary in the same sense as Larry Coker.
2a. Siddle's mistake is not who's starting at PG; his mistake is not having a coherent offense. I know that sounds like I'm disagreeing with you, but I'm not. I'm saying the issue is worse than a personnel decision. Phillips is better suited to cover his *** than Sims, but it's bad offense either way.
2b. To my surprise, High Point's comeback came with Shy on the floor. The only real life we showed offensively was a brief stretch where Tubby tried to turn us over with full court pressure, but only sped us up. There weren't any brilliant coaching adjustments by either coach that I saw.
3. It was a big bucket for Sims. Happy for him and the team. Regardless of how we got it, I'm sure it feels good and the locker room needed it. Baker only has 1 block in score sheet, but I thought he had two in OT. He had some good moments today.
4. HPU is everything that is wrong with higher education. Meh education for really high tuition so that they can have ALL the buildings. I am not a fan of their model.
5. I only watched the second half a second time and I thought Fornes' minutes were okay. His outlet pass to Okauru was a bright spot, but then he turns it over and doesn't hustle back to give up a rebound and dunk. He followed that up by picking up a bad foul. But, we were +12 when he was on the floor today.
