If Clark doesn't start bringing in some immediate players, he aint leaving Bham anytime soon for his wife's sake

TJ3 just left because he knew we were getting Spencer Ratller. 03-lmfao

I know...I said that. I said right now it is just taking....it will give, but that isn't the case at this moment

RE: Players who have entered the Transfer Portal
Many players already know where they are going before they enter the portal. We'll see how soon players commit when the early signing period starts next Wednesday, Dec 15 until Friday, Dec 17. This weekend is the last one - lots of visits...

If so, that's okay with me. That's why I was so disappointed with this season - this was going to be the big one and then we'd have to start rebuilding. This isn't really a surprise.

I'd much rather be rebuilding in our last year with C-USA than in our first year of the AAC. It's only going to suck because this should've been our year.

Add Lucious Stanley. No surprise there. Have Two RB commits.

RE: Players who have entered the Transfer Portal
People are going to freak out unnecessarily across the country, at virtually every school, about the transfer portal without looking at circumstances. Not just speaking about the UAB -- I think this is true all across the country.

That extra COVID year is going to play a HUGE part in it. Lots of guys playing with house money. They have already completed degrees, in many cases already being 4, 5 or even 6 years at a school. UAB has a ton of these guys. Maybe they want a change? Maybe they want a different degree? Maybe they want to a new experience, a new coaching approach, more playing time or just to be closer to home or a girlfriend or to play with an old teammate -- any number of things. It doesn't necessarily mean anything bad about their current experience, although a lot of people will automatically assume that.

I think most of the ones leaving UAB will feel like they had a great experience and that their time here is simply done. They accomplished most of what they came to UAB to do: championships, new stadium, degree, and they're now blessed with a unique opportunity to be recruited again and see what opportunities they have earned. Does anyone really blame them for that? I don't.

Flip side is also true. You're going to see some players, even good ones, transfer because it was made clear to them their role would diminish. These teams have younger talent they need to play and younger players they need to bring into their programs. It's not easy to recruit certain positions with 3-4 upperclassmen blocking slots.

It's going to take 3-4 years to normalize.

Portal is going to be CRAZY this year. Players with multiple years of eligibility remaining are going to be in huge demand.

I think you’ve nailed it. I think the extra year has really screwed our perspective. We are used to players coming and staying 4/5 years, hopefully getting a degree and moving on. We’ve got guys who have been here 5 years with eligibility remaining. The path to move up gets clogged

Add that even the best coaches get tuned out over time, thus some of the coaching churn. Even relatively successful coaches who stay put are going to lose some of the room. Players lose the willingness to take a coach’s crap, structure, discipline, and want something different when they realize they aren’t going to make the NFL

I wouldn't be surprised if this is part of why UAB, Liberty and a few others disappointed this year

RaJae is the only concerning loss. You’d hope we’d find a decent QB, too. Not a Juco back up with 40-50 reps.

RE: Players who have entered the Transfer Portal
Linus, I think your last point is a really good one ... 5-6 years is a loooong time to be anywhere.

Most of these guys leaving, including RJS, would be gone already without the exemption. They fulfilled their time at UAB.

The problem I do see is that the portal is going to be so full that some players are could end up being disappointed. They might not be upgrading their situation like they'd hope.

Of the ones who've left so far, RJS is gonna get the most interest. He has two years left. That's like a juco but with proven D1 tape.

We have a really good quarterback already. I dont think people realize just how good Hopkins was this year. We do need to get his replacement on campus though, because we only have him for one more year.

Kris Moll is a huge loss, would have been one of the top 2-3 returning players on defense if healthy.

Editing this to point out:

Hopkins was 11th nationally in passing efficiency and 6th nationally in yards per completion:

1 Grayson McCall Coastal Carolina So. QB 10 211 154 3 2558 23 207.95
2 C.J. Stroud Ohio St. So. QB 11 395 280 5 3862 38 182.23
3 Hendon Hooker Tennessee Sr. QB 12 261 180 3 2567 26 182.16
4 Stetson Bennett Georgia Sr. QB 12 231 148 7 2325 24 176.84
5 Bryce Young Alabama So. QB 13 462 314 4 4322 43 175.53
6 K.J. Jefferson Arkansas So. QB 12 275 184 3 2578 21 168.67
7 Bailey Zappe Western Ky. Sr. QB 13 645 445 11 5570 56 166.77
8 Caleb Williams Oklahoma Fr. QB 10 184 115 4 1670 18 166.67
9 Kenny Pickett Pittsburgh Sr. QB 13 497 334 7 4319 42 165.27

11 Dylan Hopkins UAB Jr. QB 12 212 136 6 2085 15 164.45

Some pretty talented company he is keeping on that list...

It wasn’t a shot at Dylan. The guys behind him. We’ve got a true freshman who is going to be raw and we already know what we’ve got with Lucero, which ain’t much. So, yeah, I’m sticking with finding a decent QB, since this is the portal thread. Maybe Lucero surprises us and challenges Dylan in the spring much like Dylan did TJ3 in the fall.

Moll, yeah, big loss if healthy. How long has it been, since he’s been that since I’m getting that response in regards to my defenses of TJ3?

Just pointing out that a good juco QB isnt going to come here to sit for one of his two remaining years behind someone he probably isnt going to beat out.

The two stats you mentioned are a direct result of the type of offense we run...it doesn't necessarily showcase his overall talent level at QB. If we aren't changing the offense up, then it doesn't matter to me who we get on QB. If we do change our offensive strategy/schemes...then I think the QB slot could be anybody's to take.

Kris Moll- RS SR
TJ3- RS SR
Vardaman- RS JR
RJS- RS JR
Stanley- RS SR

Random question: Did Covid allow for more than 85 scholarship players like basketball was allowing more than 13 scholarship players?

I have us at around 20 spots for the signing class. Dudley thinks we’ll have a few more spots for the portal

22 SRs. 2 of which are walkons.
33 JR, 25 are RS JRs
21 SO
40-50 FR, I quit counting at 40

Any ideas on what we're targeting in the portal? My thoughts are rb just in case of McBride or at least some depth behind, some OL/DL especially someone who can be disruptive pass rusher, maybe a wr/te

From my point of view
If you are not a senior and you transfer ,,,you are extremely talented or the back up is better then you

A variety. The recruiting account is following Harrison Bailey, LeDarrius Cox, Frank Ladson Jr, Jacoby Windmon, James Gordon.

That don’t mean much. Could just be inquiries.

RE: Players who have entered the Transfer Portal
Covid waiver did allow for scholarship limit exemption this year, i think, but not next year. Some players are going to have no choice but to transfer.

It is hard to know exactly how much depth exists that we didn't see. Coaches obviously have a handle on that based on what they see in practice. However, lots of guys who could have played in 2021 didn't play at all -- Lucero being one of them. Some of the backup OLs being others. Would have loved to have seen them get more game experience, especially with the covid waiver and 4-game redshirt rule, to really find out what we have.

This right here is the UNSEEN price of dumb penalties over the last 2 years. We had games we won that could have been over in the 3rd quarter, giving meaningful snaps for reserves. Instead we had dogfights down to the wire with inferior teams and the same 6 offensive linemen taking all the snaps for 2 years. Maybe the guys behind them can play, and the coaches know that already, but ... Maybe Lucero can be the QB if Dylan gets hurt. But wouldn't it have been good to see him at North Texas or Louisiana Tech or in a beatdown of Rice that didn't happen because we let people keep converting 3rd and 22 with PFs and PIs?

Will these guys in the portal play in the bowl game? I assume not, right? Makes it even less likely that we will put up a good fight.
