Coach Simpson
Arkansas State: UAB corners coach Jay Simpson is joining Butch Jones' staff as defensive backs coach / defensive pass game coordinator, Matt Zenitz tweets.

If true, this seems like a sizable loss.

He’s probably our best recruiter.

I agree. The losses of Owens (ga so) & Craddock (troy) were significant. Simpson was our recruiting coordinator & signing day is coming up. I know Blankenship has been named as o-line replacement. We'll see how that works out. Lacks experience, so won't have a voice. If Vincent has deficiencies, wait until Owens' & Craddock's voices aren't there as sounding boards. I'm not sure what role Hinshaw is going to have? Given the shake up, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I'm hopeful. We'll see.

That program is such a dumpster fire right now. Clark was smart to turn them down.

He has a lot of connections in Miami, definitely one of our best.

Agreed. I wouldn't even call these lateral moves; however, some are getting a raise and added titles. It would be different if they were moving on to AAC or P5 schools.
Hopefully that means we will be beefing up our staff and getting ready for the AAC move.

Simpson is a huge loss though. Our DBs (when healthy) was one of our best position groups. We even have a former DB playing in the Super Bowl!

He was also one of our best recruiters.
Interested to see who we hire for all the vacant positions.

RE: Coach Simpson
Coaches, especially good young ones with aspirations, rarely stay in one place. Moving is how you get paid, gain experience, increase responsibility and strength of network through exposure to more coaches. Honestly surprised we haven’t had more turnover over the years, and it says a lot about the staff cohesion. But Simpson is a good one and I am sure he’s getting a nice raise and more responsibility, so …

Having this happen just before signing day is probably not an accident...

RE: Coach Simpson
I don't think it's concerning when staff turnover is because the coach is getting a promotion.

Agreed. Nobody thought Alabama was a sinking ship when Huff departed for Marshall

I don't think that's the concern, it's more so how much turnover there was this season...especially for a team that closed out the season on such a high note.

Ending the season on a high note is exactly when you would lose good young assistants. They don’t hire many guys off 3-9 teams
