Yea. Our kicking game has really deflated our SP+ numbers. We're still top 5, but we're 79th in special teams and nearly all of it is fg kicking related.

UC will win the national championship on a last second, 50+ yard field goal, raising us all from the depths of despair to utter euphoria in a millisecond. Grown men will cry.

Senior Alabama starting CB Josh Jobe is out for the CFP due to surgery.

Poor Bama. Guess they’ll have to bring in their back up 5 star.

Freshman Kool-Aid McKinstey takes over. Yeah, that’s his name. He made the All SEC Freshman team as a backup.

Well, if there's one less star DB to throw out there...

His replacement was a 5 star who was the #1 CB in the class of 2021. Rated a .99+ on 247

Perhaps out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Is he a frosh? If so, that may factor in as much as talent. I get it. Bama has the talent pool but it sure can't hurt to have a few of those 5 star/experienced dudes not playing for them in a few weeks. I'm really looking forward to the matchup between Bama's passing game and our pass defense. Like I posted elsewhere, Sauce wants a challenge and now he has it. My gut tells me Bama knows/hears we have an AA and Thorpe winner in the back end and the coach of the year and they will be ready to take it to us. They're Alabama after all...

True freshman. He’s shown pretty well in his limited snaps.

Metchie is a big loss. He’s not the home run All American Williams is but he’s so good at so many things. He was their go to all year. Williams does most of his damage on flat out fly/go routes. Our CB’s are going to feel like they ran 4 dozen 50 yard dashes after that game.

For sure. In the analytics community, it is often argued that a bad kicker is preferable because any win% you lose will be quickly made up if it makes you go for 4th downs. Obviously, the best option analytically is having a good kicker, but going anyway whenever possible, but there is always an information lag on coaches implementing that.

I'm 100% sure that in 10 years when everyone goes for way more 4th downs, we'll look back on this era of dominant offense and mediocre kickers and have a good laugh about how often people chose to kick.

As if analytics and a terrible FG season weren't enough, 4th downs also increase variance and can lead to a wider range of outcomes (i.e. upsets). Anyway, please go for 4th downs against Bama.

ya, they will be motivated to stick it to Sauce and Coby given all this press. That's fine. GA chucked it around pretty good on us last year 300+ range but we played well in red zone to minimize damage. Would take similar result this year.

Honestly, I'm not overly concerned about our defense. We are really, really good and consistent on that side of the ball. It's on offense that we need to maintain the clock and score touchdowns - not field goals or empty possessions. Ridder will have to play his best game of the year and we have to have a hint of a running game. That's where I believe we'll see more of Ridder running in this one because that X factor can give Bama defenders some issues. And I don't mean just called running plays - scramble out of the pocket to keep drives going has to be included.

Agreed. And some degree of the unexpected with Tucker on some sweeps and Montgomery catching some passes perhaps...

RE: CFP COTTON BOWL BEARCATS VS ALABAMA- GO BEARCATS, ROLL THE TIDE
Need to use some mis-direction plays, haven’t showed many this season. Bama will study film and tendencies, anything different at key times will be big play potential - back side wheel routes, etc. Also will need to force their lb’s to cover TE’s, offense will need to create mis-matches. I really liked how Houston used #1 to create them, I’d like to think UC could use Tucker in that role. Denbrock will need to come up with some things not shown on film this season. Can’t run into the pile as much as they’ve done. Be aggressive on the play calling, seems the offense runs smoother when they are.

I'd take Alec Pierce over pretty much any 5-star true freshman corner this year. Unfortunetly Kool-Aid is probably the most born ready of that bunch lol.

Kool-Aid reminds of a comment Michael Irvin once made when Cadillac Williams was at Auburn-- Irvin said "You know a brother can ball when his name is Cadillac".

He started 4 games in place of the other starting corner who has been out with an injury (I forget his name) but he will be back for the UC game. KoolAid had an interception against Auburn. His jersey is #1 so that should tell you something about his attitude.

Any true freshman who is starting games for Alabama is likely someone to be reckoned with. Those 5 starts usually sit for a couple years. The DB’s are Saban’s pet position group, too. He still runs them through drills himself before games.

700 WLW had a guy on that said that the Alabama side was having a hard time selling all their tickets. Claimed that they thought that it was going to be an easy win and they would just save their money for the Championship game. Said that the UC side might be bigger and loader for this game. I hope so. Would love to have the crowd on our side.
