RE: WBB at UTA
I'm gonna make one of my five allotted positive comments of the year: I'm impressed with this team so far. We don't really have a true PG (though Jackson has been fine), we don't really have a true post big, we don't really have many players who can create on their own, Swayze's been out all year, etc. etc. and yet for the most part we've been competitive. There have no doubt been growing pains, but this group is much further along than I expected.

29-26 UTA at the half.

Do you believe that the 10/30 in the 1st half is the kind of shooting that should be expected this season? I have not seen a game, so I don't know.

RE: WBB at UTA
Feels like we have a bad quarter defensively every game. 21 points in the 3rd already for UTA. That's what we can't survive. Just don't have the offensive firepower to compete with better teams when we don't play a complete game on defense.

50-36 UTA

Defense? Which teams will you beat shooting 21/61 (34.4%)?

If you take out the one disastrous defensive quarter, the score is 46-43 Rice. So the answer to your question is, if we were better defensively in the 3rd quarter, UT Arlington? Now I know that's not how sports work. But with a better effort in the 3rd quarter, this game is easily winnable.

Meanwhile, it's 69-61 UTA with 39 seconds left. We're not going to win, but really good fight since we went down 20.

73-65 UTA final. Probably flatters us a bit, but there was good fight at the end. Probably Jackson's best college game. 11 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, a block and a steal. Crosthwait just 2-11. We need more from her. Some other good individual performances. 19 and 7 for Austin and 14 points from Bokunewciz. In the end, just undone by the bad 3rd quarter.

That steal by Austin at the end was nice.

But, when you have 3 players account for 46% of the team's field goal attempted, they'd better have more than 33⅓% of the team's field goals made.

...and shooting under 50% from the charity stripe (9-19).

Crossthwaite is one tough cookie. I thought she heard a pop in the Pacific game, but I guess her MRI came back negative.

And yes, I think we're going to like Edmonds as a coach (and her staff). They seem to have gotten a ton of improvement from Austin already, and I think they're quickly developing some of the other young players (like Fisher and Bokunewicz). It's still going to be a tough year this year due to our lack of bodies, but I could see us challenging for the conference title again next year.

It's still going to be a tough year this year due to our lack of bodies, but I could see us challenging for the conference title again next year.

It was clear from the practice attended prior to the Assist Club event that Austin was the most improved player on the team. And Fisher was Tina's prize recruit in this year's incoming class.

As for Catlyn, she's certainly a tough one, but she's also clearly still hurting. I'm not sure if she's fully recovered from her back injury and whatever she did to her leg/knee, it has to be affecting her game after only one week since the injury. She's a much better shooter than her 2-11 today, and she has really not shot well all season so far.

As for the lack of bodies, that's Edmonds own doing based on her conscious decision not to aggressively work the transfer portal. Instead, she and her staff focused on recruiting for the classes of 2022 and '23.

Again, I like that unlike Pera and almost everybody else, Edmonds does not resort to coach speak. Rather, she tells it like it is. The OG did the same. Here's her post-game comments...

Quote:Postgame Reaction - Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds
"I'll start by saying I'm disappointed in the outcome and that we dug ourselves such a hole in the third quarter before we turned it on, but I am proud of our fight. I'm proud that we didn't quit but I just want to see the fight show up sooner. We have things we can control that we need to clean up and we will."

The announcers said that UTA has won the last 5 against Rice. I never would have guessed that.

Looks like Swayze and Wiley Green were both at a concert. She must he ready to play any day now.

Rice made a valiant effort, but don't feel too bad. We have a pretty good team. We beat Houston in OT and beat #13 USF a few days ago.
