Why would he do this now?
Why would Stanley Hubbard leave now? He put his name in the transfer portal. He's starting at center for a team that is in contention for a National Championship. Anybody have any incite?

In case you don't know what I'm talking about--

I don't know how to share things from Twitter on here, but he announced this on twitter. I saw it in the recruiting thread.

I agree, it doesn’t make sense. Why wouldn’t he sit the bench in the playoffs and be ready to start if another injury occurred. Transfer after the playoffs

It sounds like his ego was hurt and didn't want to sit on the bench. He either left because he was angry and didn't want to sit or he wanted to hurt the school as much as he had been hurt.
To me, it just screams that the staff made the right decision. Of all the positions on the football team, the offensive line needs unselfish players. They are truly the unsung heroes of a football team. They get no credit when things go well and when things go poorly they get all the blame.
Perhaps there is more to it, but players have left for similar reasons before.

Yeah, sure seems like the coaches told him a) he's being benched for now and b) he's being recruited over and won't be playing next year and he got his ego bruised and bailed early.

Have to say, this is not JMU specific at all and obviously things are really weird for Dukes with the transition coming, but the transfer portal and not having to sit out combined with early signing day is brutal for FCS playoffs.

As a former O-lineman, let me suggest one additional descriptor: smartest on the field

Otherwise, I approve this message.

As a former HS Offensive guard I will see we were more cerebral. D-line react and are easily tricked.

RE: Why would he do this now?
We lost a disgruntled backup center, Montana St. just lost their starting QB to the portal…

Oof, bet the Mont St v UT M line just moved.

Even if he plays, thats a massive distraction for them.

I think Montana St. was going to make a change at QB after recent poor play. This is similar to Hubbard.

I look at their stats from this season and don’t think he’s played poorly. At least the backup started for them in 2019 and played well then, but lost his job when McKay transferred in from NC State.

And while they lost their last game to Montana is doesn’t look like he played horribly, no INTs or fumbles.

https://msubobcats.com/sports/football/s...score/6004

The school released their 2-deep and he was starting.
Quote: It is unknown at this time whether or not McKay will suit up for this weekend's playoff game. He was listed as the Bobcats' first-string quarterback on Wednesday when the team released their most recent depth chart.

I do not think a player is permitted to continue playing once officially entering the portal. If he did poorly it would lead to accusations of sabotage, and if I was a coach there would be 0.00% chance I would go with somebody who quit on me like this.

I gathered my take from their message board. Seems his recent play wasn't great and there were clamoring for a change.

D1 sports is entertainment. If fans/alums are interested and invested, these questions are going to be asked. I always marvel at folks who shout down folks for curiosity as if there’s some moral high ground in not asking the obvious questions.
