Seems like a no brainer type hire.

As good as ND has been lately -- and they've done well under Kelly -- they could take a step forward with Freeman as the head coach.

I wonder if Kelly floating the word that he was trying to get him to come to LSU with him was a ploy to get ND to commit to naming him HC instead of Interim HC. Doing him a solid on his way out the door?

Not one chance at all. Kelly cares about Kelly. He made the offer to Freeman because he knew Freeman's value to him as LSU head coach.

Most of the current ND assistant coaches had offers with big raises to join Kelly in Baton Rouge.

Most of those guys refused and are staying at ND, including OC Tommy Rees, RB coach Lance Taylor, DL (and probably future DC) Mike Elston, strength and conditioning coach Matt Balis, secondary coach Mike Mickens and tight ends coach John McNulty.

Everyone at ND raves about Marcus Freeman, whom ND ironically outbid LSU for as DC last January. Players, coaches, staff, former players, boosters and especially incoming recruits, all of them.

Freeman was the consensus, obvious choice for ND. He is a well regarded, up and coming coach and his selection saved a recruiting class ranked #4 right now and saved ND a transfer portal problem.

Contrast what happened at Oklahoma when Riley left to what happened at ND when Kelly left.

Any effort by Kelly to do him a solid, which didn't happen, would not have mattered one bit.

This all got done in two days. Well done, Jack Swarbrick.

Three cheers for Kelly.
Not only did he hire good assistants, he hired assistants that "fit" the institution they were hired to serve. There was obviously a bond between coach(s) and school as evident by the number of ND assistants that are choosing to stay at Notre Dame instead of following Kelly to LSU.
Kudos to Swarbrick for realizing the same thing.

Excellent hire by Notre Dame. An up and coming defensive-minded coach that relates to players and is a monster on the recruiting trail. It was only a matter of time before he landed a power gig.

This is true. Just like ND cares about ND not the ACC.

Kelly didn't acquit himself well in his exit from ND.

Agree. I have a feeling that voluntarily leaving ND football for another university would never be well received, but Kelly’s actions don’t help.

Sure, college football is just business, nothing else.

RE: Marcus Freeman set to become the next Head Football Coach at Notre Dame
Becomes Officially Official this afternoon.

Notre Dame is expected to announce defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman as its next head football coach early Friday morning, sources told ESPN.

An introductory news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on Monday, per sources.

Freeman, 35, is completing his first season as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator. He will replace Brian Kelly, who left Notre Dame to become LSU's coach earlier this week.

I bear Kelly no ill will, but he is getting hammered online for doing things like faking a Southern accent during a speech to LSU fans at halftime of a basketball game and using the same exact speech to LSU football players that he recently gave to ND players.

I hope the money leaves him set for life because I really think career-wise this was a big mistake.

He is a great coach, but this may be his Fonzie moment.

Completely disagree that this was a mistake for Kelly’s career.

He’s probably getting a lot more money, and the contract likely has guarantees even if he fails. This seems similar to the Jimbo Fisher-Texas A&M deal…LSU willingness to spend money on coaches is way above what ND would do.

In addition, Kelly can claim that he is obsessed with winning a national championship. LSU has a phenomenal recruiting territory. The school will also give him much greater latitude in admitting athletes who are willing to be students.

And people wonder why Cincy fans still hate Brian Kelly. His departure from ND was exactly the same plan as when he left UC.

Money is one thing. But he is getting into a 10 year contract with LSU and there is no way ND would sign for such a long period. Kelly is already 60.

He has been a very good coach but I don’t think he won any major bow game/playoff not to mention a championship.

So yes from his perspective, this is a definitely right move.
