I wonder if 5-3 against scrub teams is an acceptable number. Or 5-4 after we play Murray St. The only saving grace there may be that we will be at home. So say we win that one and go 6-3 then face UT and Bama, both certain losses if we continue playing this way. At 6-5 can I start worrying? or what if we actually go 5-6?

I said after ISU beat us that we could easily lose the next 5. We aren't even into the most difficult part of that 6 game stretch and we're already down 2.

If the Tigers win against Murray State and lose to both Alabama and Tennessee, then there is a need to worry. Belmont won 26 games last season and they weren't even in the consideration to be a tournament team. Why? They have 0 Q1 wins and a Q3 loss to add on top of that. Belmont realized there's a problem, and in the result of that - they're leaving the Ohio Valley and moving to the Missouri Valley Conference. From what I'm hearing, the Georgia loss will more than likely be considered a Q3 loss. I have no idea about Iowa State. But they had an opportunity for a Q1 win against Ole Miss and they blew that opportunity.
The problem that Belmont had last year is the same direction Memphis is going into now. Playing conference openers at Tulane and Wichita State to open conference play will be tough for us. The whole Memphis team (staff and players) have to realize they're going to get everybody's best shot in conference season. Have to imagine that the team is going to drop 2-3 games on the road.
I hope I'm wrong, but it's just going to be a tough road ahead for us. The last thing we needed is for Penny to call out his team through the media. I know Nick Saban does that occasionally. He talks to his team through the press conferences and all that. But comparing Penny to Nick Saban is insulting to Nick right now.

No one here wants facts, they'd rather project a view that really is no more than biased opinion. Not many here want to look at tourney selection objectively. Just like last season, everyone complained about WSU making the tourney over us even though we trounced them. The selection was simply WSU had the better wins & fewer bad losses.

Even though we improved a lot last year, it was still too little too late. The losses at the beginning of the season last year is why we didn't make the tournament. It's not the loss to Houston in March. If we don't make the tournament again this season because of a close loss to Houston (using them as an example), it's not that we lost to them. It's that we didn't handle our business against Iowa State, Georgia, and the teams that we're about to play in our next 4 games. Our conference schedule is weak enough where only 5-7 games will determine our season. Not 25-30 games.

Sorry but we know now the 2 losses to Houston did keep us out. We win just one of those as we are in a likely and win a few NCAA games.

I realize it does not fit the "Penny sucks" narrative but it is what happened.

It came down to those 2 games at the end of the year and missed FT kept us out. We coached and played well enough to win both against a Final 4 Houston team.

I think the point the previous poster was making is that if Memphis had taken care of business early in the season, the two close losses to Houston wouldn’t have mattered. Memphis was in a position where they had to steal one against Houston just to get in. No question Memphis was playing much better by season’s end. But they had dug such a huge hole for themselves by that point, they had no room for error.

The fact remains the season came down to those 2 games against Houston. The team knew that week winning one of those game likely had us in the tourney. We played well enough to win both games, it was FTs that kept us out. Not bad coaching and not poor play.

You are actually making my point for me. The point of all of this was the some posters were claiming Penny's teams never improve and that is a clear and obvious lie.

Last years team made tremendous improvement and were clear a S16 caliber team come March.
